Trey’s first time fishing!

July 11, 2013 Justin Beam 2 Comments

This year my son turns 3, I decided during the winter that I was going to get back into fishing and teach him to fish this year. I moved to CT about 10 years ago and it has been over 12 years since I have been fishing. Never having fished in CT I didn’t know where to go or what bait would be effective etc. So I began researching the DEEP website . I went to my local bait shop and purchased an all waters license, tackle box and a couple lures. Next I found a few local lakes and ponds around me that I could visit alone & check it out before I take my son.  I began at Branford Supply Ponds, like I said it has been at least 12 years since I cast a line out.  So I took my Daiwa D-shock fishing pole and reel, tied on a hook with a night crawler, weight and float then threw it out. Of course the only thing that was interested was small Sun Perch. I caught a few small ones and decided that it would be an ok place to take my son.

Now this is the day that every father dreams of (I think), my 2 ½ yr old son and I take a ride to the lake with his St. Croix Lightning McQueen fishing pole. I set him up and showed him how to throw his line out then helped him hold it to watch for a bite. We waited about a minute and his float began to bob in the water. Suddenly it was completely submerged and we gave it a quick jerk, FISH ON! Now I helped him hold it while he reeled it in! The fish was tiny as you can see below, but it might as well have been a 30 lb. monster given his reaction when he saw it come out of the water.

That was one of the best moments of my life and a memory I will never forget! So we kept fishing and caught a few more, after a couple hours we headed home victorious! After that day I was hooked like I was a kid again, now I am on a quest to catch more fish. I simply can’t get enough! Make sure to check back soon to see what I catch & wish me luck!

What is your most memorable fishing trip as a kid? Are you teaching your child to fish? How are you doing it?

How adorable, I’ve never been fishing, I don’t know how to fish! So if you guessed that I haven’t taken my kids fishing you’re right. My husband is from DE, so they’ve been fishing, but not with me… I think I’d be scared to even remove the fish from the hook.

It’s a lot of fun especially with kids. You should have your husband take you, oh and don’t worry about the hook just ask him to do it!

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
