Tips for Keeping Sugar Cravings at Bay During Halloween

Caramel covered apples in Candy store

I’m very active in the summer and I eat very healthy with all the fresh fruits and vegetables.  When October approaches I start to spiral down with all the candy that is in front of my face. And then with the holidays right around the corner, I know that all the work I did will be for nothing. I have a new mindset this fall and I received some tips from Felicia Romero, celebrity fitness and nutrition expert, that I’d like to share with you.

Felicia understands the struggle is real.

From caramel apples to chocolate bars and jelly beans, Halloween can be more of a “trick” than a “treat” for some. Even for those who are fairly disciplined with our diet can battle sugar cravings, during this time of year.

“The good news, is that following a few simple daily steps can help you avoid indulging and falling to the season’s sugar spell,” said Felicia.

Try eating more protein.

Protein will help to fill you up. Most people don’t get enough protein and majority of most people’s diet is carb-based. If we increase our protein intake, it can definitely help keep those sugar cravings at bay.

Replace sweets and sugar with fruits.

The sugars in fruits are digested differently than normal table sugar or sugar in candy and processed foods. Fruits contain fiber, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and good phytonutrients, all of which help counteract the bad metabolic effects of fructose and glucose. The fiber in fruit also slows the absorption of the sugars so you don’t get as high of a sugar rush (and as low of a crash.)

Go for quality, not quantity.

Just because you’re trying to ward off sugar cravings, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy any sweet treats this Halloween. Eat a small piece of 70% dark chocolate instead of a candy bar. The treat will be more satisfying and you’ll be consuming less sugar in the long run.

Get rid of leftover temptation.

As Halloween comes and goes, don’t let the temptation of leftover candy derail your healthy habits. Over-indulging in snackable foods is one of the easiest ways to accidentally sideline your health and wellness journey. If you know you can’t resist sugar at certain times then get it out of the pantry

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
