Pokemon Go- The Danger Is Real – A Guide For Parents

July 9, 2016 Rachel Ferrucci Leave a Comment

In case you’re wondering why everyone is suddenly walking around fixated on their phones, even more than usual, it’s because Pokemon Go app is the latest craze and invading our lives in full force. We are talking body snatchers. You will see Pokemon fans from days of old, to people who are just now catching on to the Pokemon phenomenon.

Pokemon Go is an augmented- reality game developed by Niantic for IOS and Android devices. The game was released in July of 2016. The game allows players to to capture, battle, train and trade virtual Pokemon who appear throughout the real world. This is the latest form of geocaching. You will find Pokemon no matter where you are and the game encourages you to get out and explore the world. When you first sign up you will receive this message:

Pokemon Go
How do I know about the message??? Because I signed up! I am also a Pokemon Go fan. I can’t wait to do it with my princes! I got to level 3 in just an hour after visiting a shopping center. I was amazed when we got there and people of all ages were walking around and catching their Pokemon! Check out the shopping mall and all the people playing!

It can be a fun time but here are real facts and tips that parents need to know about Pokemon Go…

Facts, Tips & Cautions:

  • Two hours on this app can wipe out your battery, so be sure to bring an external charger.
  • Parents get up to two hours of quiet time if your child is old enough to go out on their own. Allowing young kids to venture out on their own is not a good idea. It is very easy for somebody focused on the game to be unaware of their surroundings and this can lead to dangerous situations (see next two bullet points for examples.)
  • One person actually fell off a bridge while playing. When they advise you to stay cognizant of your surroundings, they are not kidding.
  • One kid found a dead body while using the app. This is precisely why children should be accompanied by an adult while playing. The game encourages exploration and with that comes the possibility of finding things other than Pokemon.
  • You and/or your child will be entertained for hours. Summer boredom be gone!!
  • This game is a good opportunity for parents to incentivize good behavior or as a reward for doing chores.
  • It’s a great way for your child to leave the couch, turn off the TV and video games in exchange for a little exercise. If gaming, exploration and physical fitness had a baby, Pokemon Go would be it!
  • Your child will want to go outside… no, they will beg to go outside (HOORAY!) To that point, make sure that they are wearing sunblock if they will be outside for extended periods of time.
  • This game can be a great bonding experience for siblings, parents and children- this is something that can be done as a team! Imagine your kids working together instead of fighting for once. Crazy, right?
  • Be sure to remind teens that this game is NOT to be played while driving. The same road rules apply to this game texting and driving… Don’t do it.
  • There are available in app purchases available up to $100 so parents beware!
  • Parents can track their child’s activity by clicking on the journal icon. It keeps a full log of the date and time of all activity. This is helpful for those parents who wish to limit their child’s gaming time.
  • Don’t be surprised if your child becomes quickly addicted to this game. It’s like the theme song says…

GOTTA CATCH ‘EM ALL!

Let us know how you and your kids like the newest craze in gaming. Do you have any tips to add ? Leave them in the comments!

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
