Men, It’s Time To Reclaim Your Sense of Adventure

February 21, 2017 Rachel Ferrucci Leave a Comment

It’s not all that easy in this day and age for men to express their rudimentary notions of traditional masculinity. The old school way of being, where you could throw off the constraints of modern life and find your sense of adventure has been, if not quite silenced, then at least turned down a few notches. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The choice between being old school and being a modern man does not have to be a choice at all; they’re not binary, and you needn’t commit yourself to one or the other. Instead, you can live in the modern world while still honoring the traditions of old. Here’s how.

Into the Wild

We’re a pampered bunch, us 21st century dwellers. Most every convenience we can think of is catered for, and if you’ve got a semi-decent job then your hardships are few. This is all good and well, but we do lose something in the process. There is something beautiful about the rugged life, about being in the outdoors knowing you have to fend for yourself in one way or another. It’s not comfortable, but who ever said the purpose in life was to be comfortable? Pack up a backpack and head into the backcountry for a few days. It’ll do you the world of good.

Old School Traveling

Of course, you don’t need to leave civilization to find adventure. It’s right in front of you, on the open roads. And in fact, being adventurous in society is what will help you the most; you don’t always want to have to be trekking through the mountains just to feel alive! Invest a motorbike and take that cross-country trip you’ve always dreamed of, or use it as a way of getting from A to B. There’s a bike and jacket to suit every type of biker, which is a fascinating concept, so find your own style and hit the open road. All the better if you have no set destination in mind!

Using Your Hands

A sense of adventure doesn’t have to always mean getting out into new surroundings or always exploring what’s over the next hill and round the next bend: it’s a state of mind. Never is this more clear than when you’re using your hands to create something. It could be out in the outdoors, using an axe to chop firewood, or building a log cabin for you to use. It could also be restoring an old, broken down vehicle. Whatever it is, using your hands will remind you of the possibilities that exist right inside of you – a key component for getting in the adventurous state of mind!

Going Your Own Way

Ultimately, it’s about finding your own way in this life, choosing the adventure that fits with your ethos and way of being. There’s no better way to be adventurous than to feel adventurous; carry that feeling with you and it’ll take you on a journey with a destination unknown to you.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
