Demystifying The Myths Surrounding Dry Skin

April 11, 2017 Rachel Ferrucci Leave a Comment

Dry skin is a common skin problem but there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Instead of bombarding our skin with lots of different moisturizers we should be focussing our regime instead Two powerful moisturizers are antioxidants and emollients, incorporate these into your routine and you’ll feel replenished in no time…

Antioxidants

The worst thing about some beauty products is that they strip our skin of its natural moisture. Too many products and treatments can leave our skin looking and feeling dry. The key to restoring dry skin is to look for ingredients which will replenish skin.

Antioxidants play a huge role in helping dry and dull skin to become glowing and moisturized. One of the main reasons that so many people have dry skin is because of overexposure to the sun. The sun’s powerful UV rays strip our skin of its natural moisture and deplete our skin’s natural defenses. Our skin, as a result, is less able to retain moisture. To pre-empt this from happening make sure you wear sunscreen every day. Otherwise, your skin will become so damaged that it won’t be able to renew itself and have a smooth surface.

This is where antioxidants come into the mix. These powerful skin healers can help to create a protective barrier around the skin’s surface. This can help to protect our skin against sun exposure and other free-radical damage from the environment. Look out for moisturizers which contain antioxidants as they will replenish skin and leave it looking rejuvenated. Vitamin C and E are two great ingredients to search for in formulas, as is green teas extract. If you find that sun exposure has left your skin saggy and less elastic, this is because over-exposure can lessen the production of elastin. Elastin helps our skin to keep its shape. Envisage Cosmetic Clinic has treatments available to tighten and tone the neck area. This is a key area of concern for those with premature aging brought on by sun damage.

Emollients

If you have dry skin the chances are you’ve heard of the term emollients. Emollients are the holy grail ingredient for parched skin in need of some serious softening. These ingredients are incredibly lubricating and help to reverse the effects of water loss. Emollients usually come in thick cream-like formulas. They are incredibly absorbent and can hold a large amount of water. There also quite luxurious in texture and feel incredibly pampering when applied to the skin.

Emollients work by creating a protective film around the outer layer of skin, the epidermis. They do this so that water can be locked in rather than escaping. Emollients are humectants. That means that they can enhance the skin’s capability to hold water.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
