4 Thoughtful Ways to Support a Loved One with Cancer

October 26, 2020 Rachel Ferrucci

Cancer is a frightening disease, and this year alone, it is estimated that over one million people will be diagnosed with it. It is not surprising that many newly-diagnosed patients see cancer as a huge threat to both their health and happiness . When a loved one announces that they have cancer, it might be challenging to find the right things to say or how to be supportive. However, studies show that people tend to fare better in a crisis when they have a robust support system. So, how do you help them get through this trying time? Here are some tips to help you be as supportive as possible when your loved one has been diagnosed with cancer.

Be present for them

You might try to understand how your loved one feels at the moment, but more often than not, you will see that you cannot. That does not make you a bad person; you do not have the power to take away their illness, but what you can do is be present for them and provide them with emotional, social, and physical support. Sometimes your presence is all they might need. You can sit with them, listen to their worries, and if they want to pray, you can pray with them. You can also assist them with other errands and responsibilities they cannot perform for the time being. It could be as little as cleaning up their homes to even taking care of their children.

Help them find the best treatment

Ensure that your loved one has the best available medical care after their diagnoses. That involves conducting a lot of research into the various doctors and facilities useful to your loved one. You can help them get a second opinion from another doctor and learn more about the disease, as well as its treatment options. Remember not to rule out holistic treatments such as acupuncture, counseling, yoga, and meditation to help them be at peace; they do not cure cancer but provide relief to some of its many symptoms. You can check out online threads or ask other people to recommend highly qualified cancer specialists who might be able to give your loved one the best treatment possible.

Help them with any legal issues

About 3-6% of cancers worldwide are caused by exposure to harmful carcinogens in the workplace. If your loved one has been exposed to such toxins and from their workplace, then they have the right to hold their employer liable for negligence. Exposure to dangerous substances like asbestos could lead to people contracting mesothelioma. Thankfully, many legal practitioners are skilled in ensuring that your loved one receives the damages they deserve. If you are in this situation, be sure to talk to a mesothelioma attorney today to see what steps to take.

Care for yourself too

It is not selfish to take care of yourself when dealing with a loved one’s cancer diagnosis. It would help if you did so because you need to be a pillar of support to them. Ensure that you get enough rest, eat healthily, and exercise to keep your mind and body strong and active. If you feel anxious or scared, consider joining a support group to share your worries and learn from others.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
