What Every Family Should Pack (Besides Their Bags) Before Going Abroad

November 20, 2024 Rachel Ferrucci

An international vacation can be an exhilarating experience that brings together family members in a refreshing, adventurous way. However, it requires much more preparation than the mundane task of just stuffing clothes in your suitcase. If you’re wondering what vital extras you need to secure before the trip, we have got you covered. Let’s delve into the critical components you need to take care of, besides packing your bags, before setting off to your exciting international destination.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance

The first prerequisite is securing comprehensive travel insurance. For instance, Safe Trip international insurance provides coverage against unexpected medical costs, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage loss, and many more unfortunate circumstances. The last thing you want is to shell out thousands of dollars on medical bills or be stranded due to unexpected trip interruptions. Always read through the policy carefully to understand what is covered and what’s not. Remember, peace of mind during your trip is as essential as the trip itself.

Visas and Passport

Ensuring your passports are up-to-date should be at the top of your list. Many countries require that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the date of your return. Applying for and obtaining necessary visas according to your destination is also a vital step. You’ll want to research the specific entry rules for the country you are visiting well in advance of your trip.

Medical Check-ups and Vaccinations

Before going abroad, it’s critical to check travel advisories regarding health risks in your intended destination. You and your family may need certain vaccinations or medications based on these advisories. Schedule appointments with your healthcare provider at least four to six weeks before your trip, as some vaccines require multiple shots spread over several weeks.

Copies of Travel Documents

Carrying backups of all your travel documents, including passports, visas, insurance policies, and driver’s licenses, can save the day in case of loss or theft. Make two copies of each document. Leave one set of copies with a trusted person at home and carry the other with you, stored separately from the originals. In the digital age, having electronic copies accessible through your email or a cloud service is also a great idea.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

If you plan to rent a car or drive at your international destination, you’ll likely need an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your domestic driver’s license. More than 150 countries recognize the IDP, and it can be invaluable in situations where foreign language skills are minimal. Apply for your permit a few weeks prior to your departure date to ensure it arrives in time.

Necessary Travel Accessories and Medications

Last but not least, don’t forget to pack essential travel accessories, such as power adapters appropriate to your destination, a high-quality travel pillow for on-the-go comfort, and a water bottle to stay hydrated. Accompanying these with a well-stocked travel health kit that includes any prescription medications, essential over-the-counter medicines, and basic first aid supplies can prove invaluable during your journey. In the excitement of traveling internationally, these often-unnoticed necessities can be overlooked. When you hit an obstacle halfway across the globe, you’ll be relieved that you packed wisely – not just clothes and toiletries but also all these factors that can make your trip smoother and safer. Remember, even the most meticulously planned trip can be derailed by unforeseen events. It’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared, and a well-executed plan can ensure your international family trip is fulfilling and comfortable from start to finish.

Why did no one warn us that menopause would turn our bodies into a crime scene… Dryness. Pain. Sneezing roulette. UTIs showing up uninvited. And doctors smiling politely and saying, “That’s just aging.” Cool. Love that for us.

Say Hello to Silky Peach Cream 🍑 A bioidentical estriol cream that works locally to rebuild thinning tissue, restore moisture, and bring back comfort where it actually matters. Not a Band-Aid. Not a $350 prescription. Not a lube that disappears by lunchtime.

Estriol is the gentlest form of estrogen our bodies naturally make, and Silky Peach Cream puts it back exactly where menopause took it away. Over time, tissue rebuilds, moisture returns, and suddenly intimacy doesn’t feel like sandpaper and regret.

Two pumps nightly. Then maintenance. Because it took years to get this dry… it’s okay if it takes a little time to feel normal again.

I’m done whispering about menopause. I got my life back. And my peach is happy again!

I didn’t expect this to be the hardest part of getting older.

If sex hurts. If you avoid intimacy. If you dread wiping.

It’s not “just dryness.” It’s estrogen loss. And yes, it’s fixable.

Menopause doesn’t ease in quietly. It shows up hot, uncomfortable, and disruptive. And for way too long, women are told to whisper about it or accept it as “just aging.” I’m done with that.

Silky Peach Cream helped restore moisture, rebuild thinning tissue, and bring back comfort where menopause took it away. Not a quick fix. Not a Band-Aid. Just real, gradual relief that made me feel like myself again.

Two pumps. Some patience. And a lot less suffering.

Stop whispering about menopause. You deserve relief. You deserve joy. Your peach deserves to be happy again.

Get the details and try it for yourself at the link in my bio.

When I found out I needed surgery, my 1st thought wasn’t the procedure. It was the fear of being handed opioids again with no real choice. After my last surgery, opioids were the only option I had, my insurance didn’t cover the non-opioid alternatives I specifically asked for. That showed me how quickly exposure can happen. Many people don’t realize that about 1 in 10 patients who receive opioids after surgery will struggle with long-term use. That’s nearly 4 million people per year. It’s no secret that opioids can lead to addiction, & we should be much louder about the fact that there are non opioid options that can be used during surgery to manage pain afterwards.
Medicare already recognizes this & separately reimburses for FDA-approved non-opioid pain treatments, proving these options are real & available. Yet insurance barriers often make them difficult or impossible to access. Instead of making decisions about my recovery with my doctor, insurance policy made them for me. As I prepare for my next surgery, I want access to every option that reduces my exposure. I know how easily things can escalate. I’ve seen opioid use continue far longer than intended. It can tear apart families before anyone realizes what’s happening. What starts as short-term pain management after surgery becomes something no one ever expected, simply because safer options were never offered. It’s frustrating that some major insurers still haven’t expanded coverage the way Medicare has. #UnitedHealthcare is one of the companies whose restrictions make it harder to access FDA-approved non-opioid surgical pain options. Because of their size, these decisions affect millions. Surgery shouldn’t be a gateway to opioid addiction. Medicare covers these options. UnitedHealthcare & others need to do the same so patients aren’t pushed toward opioids by outdated policies. Patients & families deserve better.
