Car safety has come a long way. The manufacturers have put real thought into car safety technologies that have made our family safer. When you start looking at all the things your car can do, you find yourself saying, “Wait! My Car Does What?”
Even if your car doesn’t have all the updated features, other cars do which helps to keep our family safe! Let’s face it, there are a lot more cars on the road now along with many more distractions. We may not be looking at our phone but other drivers are. Not to mention the regular distractions from those tiny passengers in the back. You need to have great focus abilities when a toy is flung from the back hitting you in the head or your seat is being kicked so much that you feel like you’re on a ride. Not to mention the “other” drivers who are texting, eating, and not paying attention. I how MyCarDoesWhat.org is bringing attention to the safety features we have in our cars.
One of my favorite cars is the Lexus and these are just a few of the safety features that I love:
Lexus Safety System + is a comprehensive package that helps mitigate collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds.
It integrates several of Lexus’ existing active safety technologies including:
- The Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection that detects sudden stops initiated by the vehicle in front, warning drivers of potential contact with obstacles ahead
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist
- Intelligent High Beam (IHB) that helps ensure optimal forward visibility during nighttime driving
- All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
The Pre-Collision System warns the driver via an audible warning as well as a visual alert through the Multi-Information Display (MID) when it detects an imminent collision, and automatically applies the brakes to reduce impact force or avoid the collision altogether. The Pre-Collision Brake Assist detects an imminent collision and increases the brake force when the driver depresses the brake pedal. The amount of additional brake pressure provided when the driver depresses the brake pedal is increased in stages according to the level of possibility of a collision.
Auto Brake helps provide the driver additional assistance. If an obstruction is detected by the sensors, and the system judges that there is a possibility of collision, a pre-brake warning illuminates the brake lights to notify the following vehicle that the driver’s vehicle will decelerate. If the probability of collision increases and the driver does not apply the brakes or steering input, the pre-collision brake is activated, helping to avoid the collision or reduce collision damage. If the collision is avoided, and the vehicle has stopped, the brake force is maintained for a maximum of two seconds until the driver operates the accelerator or brake pedal.
Other safety features I love that are on many cars are:
- Back-up safety camera- This makes it so easy to see any obstacle and some give you a 360 bird’s eye view
- Drowsiness alert- This feature may alert you if you’re drowsy and suggest you take a break when it’s safe to do so
- Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) may warn you if your tires are under- or over-inflated, helping increase your fuel economy and even potentially preventing a tire blowout.
