Unique Ways to Pop the Question in 2026

January 20, 2026 Rachel Ferrucci

The standard proposal is taking a backseat this year.

While a candlelit dinner with a glass of champagne might always be a classic choice, couples are leaning into experiences that genuinely reflect their journey together. Going off script is one of the most effective ways to make the moment memorable – and for all the best reasons!

If you’re ready to take the leap and pop the question this year, here’s how to ditch the clichés and plan a proposal that feels right for you.

For the thrill seekers

If your favourite days together involve muddy boots or a shared sense of vertigo, an adventurous proposal is the way to go.

There’s something incredibly raw about reaching the summit or watching the world slowly wake up from lofty heights in a hot air balloon. No matter the challenge or experience, the most important part is knowing that there’s no one else you’d rather share it with.

The key here is the element of surprise. A spontaneous weekend road trip or simply visiting your favourite trails will provide a stunning backdrop that doesn’t feel stage or out of the ordinary. Just make sure to choose a beautiful engagement ring and keep it tucked away securely before you set off!

Magic in the mundane

You don’t need to climb mountains or book a flight to create a monumental moment. Some of the most moving proposals happen slap-bang in the middle of everyday life. And if you’re a couple who values peace and privacy, a proposal at home could be incredibly powerful.

Consider emptying the living room and setting up a candlelit stage, just like running influencer James Warnock did at the start of this year. If you want to add a bit of fun, why not plan a scavenger hunt that leads them through memory lane, using photos and tickets from your first dates? Even a movie night could end with a surprise reveal.

Staying at home gives you an intimate, low-pressure moment that’s all yours.

Destination milestones

If travel is your love language, 2026 is the year to turn a holiday into a core memory. Whether it’s a city you’ve both always dreamt of visiting or a snowy cabin in the Scottish Highlands, a destination proposal turns the yes into a beautiful celebration. The strongest appeal of this approach is that the location becomes a place you’ll return to for anniversaries in years to come.

Don’t forget the detail

Regardless of the location, the proposals that truly land are the ones that feel personalised. It’s the smaller touches that count most – the ones that only the two of you know about. Remember to include a few special details:

  • A personal note: A handwritten letter can express things that nerves might make you forget in the moment.
  • Your own soundtrack: A custom playlist of songs that have defined your best days and nights together.
  • The family: Involving children, parents or even a four-legged friend (maybe with the ring attached to their collar) adds a layer of warmth that’s impossible to replicate.

Ultimately, the best proposal isn’t the most expensive or the one that looks best on Instagram. It’s always the one where your partner looks at you and sees nothing but their whole future.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
