You could spend two years in Europe and still not see everything it has to offer. So, when you only have a two-week vacation, you are likely to end up scratching your head at the vast array of countries, cities, and regions that Europe has to offer.
Where should you go? What will you miss? And how are you going to get around? Well, if you are planning a vacation in Europe this year or the next, we hope you find this of interest.
The UK
If you haven’t been to the UK and are planning a trip to Europe, the current political situation means you will be better off going sooner rather than later, as it will be more difficult to travel to European countries in the not-too-distant future. London is the obvious choice, of course, but some exploration in the north of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales is also recommended. It’s the perfect place to start your European adventure, as everyone speaks your language, and most other countries are around two or three hours away by plane.
Paris, France
France is a beautiful country, but as you are pressed for time, it’s advisable to check out Paris. From the United Kingdom, it’s easy to pick up cheap flights to Paris and spend a few nights in the city of love – although it can be expensive! Another reason to head to Paris is that you can pick up the inter-rail from here, which travels through almost every major European destination. While you are there, a trip to the Eiffel Tower is a must, as is the Sacre Couer – go at dawn for some incredible morning views of the city.
Barcelona, Spain
From Paris, take the Inter-rail or fly down to Spain and the Catalonia region, and make sure you stop for at least a few nights in Barcelona. It is a city of spectacular architecture and culture, and there is an incredible amount to see and do, whatever your tastes. There’s great food in abundance, too, and the overall atmosphere on the streets at nighttime can be electric during the high season.
Venice, Italy
Quite simply, there is nowhere else like Venice in the world. It’s an ancient city set in a vast lagoon, and the great majority of routes through the old buildings are waterways. Get yourself a trip across the city on a gondola, and make sure you get out into the ‘real’ Venice beyond the major tourist traps. It can be expensive here, but it’s also a relatively small place, meaning you won’t have to spend much more than two or three nights.
The Greek Islands
The Greek Islands should also be on your itinerary. You can pretty much guarantee the sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere, with incredible beaches and crystal clear waters to boot. It’s unlike anywhere else in Europe and spending a few days island hopping from Mykonos to Kefalonia, and all the others can be an incredible experience.
OK, so that’s all we have time for – yet we have missed so much! No Germany, no Amsterdam or Scandinavia, and no Eastern Europe, either. Perhaps you can save the eastern half of Europe for your next trip?
