Often in the summer you hear about children passing out during practices because they’re dehydrated. Sports are played all year long and let’s face it, there is not anything that will stop a child from playing. There’s a reason we want to bottle youth! Teaching your kids healthy habits at an early age will benefit them at all times. I started giving my kids water to drink as infants and today they still drink mostly water. When you are thirsty and need something to quench it, water usually does the drink but it could be boring. My favorite is to add lemon to my water but I’m not always stocked. Dehydration is associated with summer heat and sweating, but cold weather can also cause dehydration. Let’s go over some tips on keeping kids hydrated.
One alternative to plain water is adding Drip Drop to it. DripDrop was created by a Mayo-Clinic-trained physician who was tired of recommending poor tasting electrolyte replacement solutions he knew his patients wouldn’t drink.
Available in lemon and berry flavors, DripDrop tastes better than most pediatric solutions, and does not contain any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. It has 2-3 times the electrolytes of sports drinks, with fewer calories. I was able to find DripDrop at CVS in the baby aisle……. How fitting since they will always be our babies! There’s also a coupon for you below so you can try DripDrop for yourself!
- Playing Outside – Outdoor activities require us to stay hydrated. Have a water bottle in reach and remind them every so often to take a drink. Create a habit of stopping to drink. This goes for you too- DripDrop is a powdered drink that treats and prevents dehydration in adults & children.
- Home From School – Children are usually hungry when they get home. This is a great time for a snack and drink. Create a habit of drinking water with DripDrop after school.
- Sports and Activities – We drive our kids to practices, games, pack lunches and keep them on schedule. Team sports gives the benefit of learning to work together as a team but teaching good drinking habits starts at home. Sports and other physical activities increase the risk of exercise-induced dehydration. Always pack a large bottle of water with DripDrop when sending them off.
- Cold and Flu- When our kids do get sick, their appetite diminishes and we usually encourage them to drink juice or water. DripDrop activates the sodium-glucose co-transport system, one of the fastest hydration mechanisms in the body. It literally pulls water from your gut and hydrates you faster. Add a bendy straw….kids love these and it will make them drink more.
- On The Go – DripDrop provides a simple, cost-effective solution that empowers everyone to treat mild to moderate dehydration. Carry packets of DripDrop with you along with bottles of water. We got used to drinking room temperature water so I kept a case of water in the back of the car. When someone gets thirsty on the road, our water and packets of lemon or berry DripDrop was readily available.
Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration in Children

Other symptoms of dehydration include:
