The family dinner isn’t something that many of us get to enjoy on a regular basis. It’s usually more something done as a special event, a ‘one off’ to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. However, the lost art of the family dinner is not something we should allow to die out completely, and if you can bring it back into your life at least two to three times a week, you will do wonders for your family bonding and dynamic. Here are some of the reasons why the family dinner is so important and how it can help you bond more easily.
Better Mental Health
Mental health is an issue we are all becoming much more aware of since it affects so many people in society, and it is likely you know someone who suffers from some kind of mental health disorder, whether that is depression, anxiety, stress, or something else.
Studies have shown that when families eat together, it can diminish at least some of these problems. Someone who is feeling stressed, for example, may find it a relief to sit and talk to their family or be involved in creating a meal for everyone. Plus, it’s good for everyone to have a chance to talk and discuss important topics, air their grievances, or celebrate good news. You might be feeling worried about the air conditioner not working well, and someone around the table suggests calling a 24 hour AC service number. Or perhaps you had a bad day at work, or the kids had trouble at school, and talking it through will help you all.
Better Physical Health
If you were left to choose your own food without anyone else to think about, would you cook something healthy and nutritious, or would you grab something from the larder, maybe try a microwave meal, or even skip the meal altogether? For some, choosing to eat as a family means choosing better food and becoming a lot healthier. When you are cooking not just for yourself but for other people – and specifically people you care about – too, you will often be more tempted by something that will be better for them.
Not only that, but if you are eating together, you will eat more slowly. You will be talking and enjoying one another’s company and not guzzling your food without thinking as you might if you were alone. This is much better for your digestive system and will help you to be healthier. Plus, you can always discuss the pros and cons of having a family workout session or exercise routine!
Information
Bonding successfully with your family means knowing more about their lives, what they are doing, how they think, and so on. You won’t have this information if you never spend any quality time together, so family mealtime is the ideal place to chat and discover new knowledge that will help you bond more easily.
Everyone leads very separate lives. Some stay at home, others are at school, others go to work, people have different hobbies and to go different places in their spare time, so having this chance to ask questions, hopefully get answers, and become a little more involved is always going to be a good thing.
