The Best Way to See England Without Renting a Car or Joining a Bus Tour

July 9, 2025 Rachel Ferrucci

If you’re heading to the UK and dreading driving on the other side of the road, or getting herded on and off a crowded tour bus, you need to know about Daytrip.com. It’s your own private driver, a comfy car, total freedom, and no stress. Oh, and it’s surprisingly affordable. I used Daytrip on my recent adventure from Brighton to London with stops at Hever Castle (Anne Boleyn’s childhood home) and Winston Churchill’s Chartwell Estate, and now I’m lowkey obsessed.

How Does Daytrip Work?

You book online. You pick a starting point and a destination (like Brighton to London), and Daytrip matches you with a vetted local driver. You can also add in extra stops or detours along the way for an additional fee. It’s like having your own UK road trip, without the “yikes, which lane do I turn into?” panic or navigating roundabouts the size of small cities.

My Daytrip Experience

I’d been soaking in the beachy vibes of Brighton’s pebbled shores, artsy lanes, and the perfect cup of tea, when it was time to head back to London. But instead of a direct trip, I booked a route with Daytrip that included two dreamy, historical stops along the way- Hever Castle and Chartwell.

Right on time, my driver Shahzad pulled up with a clean and spacious car, a warm smile, and bless him, snacks and chilled water already waiting. We hit the road for what turned out to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable travel days of my entire trip.

Hever Castle, AKA Anne Boleyn’s Estate

First stop- Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn and one of the most charming estates in all of England. The gardens alone are worth the visit, not to mention the rich Tudor history that seeps from every room and hallway. I may have lost track of time just a little bit (okay, a lot) because I was fully immersed in the Henry VIII drama, the hand-painted ceilings, and imagining what life was like for Anne before things… got messy.

My driver Shahzad was totally cool with the longer-than-planned visit. He didn’t rush me or check his watch once. It felt like having a friend patiently waiting while I fangirled over Tudor history.

Churchill’s Estate… Kind Of

By the time we wrapped up at Hever Castle, we were pushing it to make it to our second stop—Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s beloved country estate, before closing time. Shahzad still insisted we go, even if just for a quick peek and a photo op.

We arrived just as the gates were closing, but I still got my Churchill moment. I stood outside the grand gate, snapped a few photos, and even peeked in to admire the beautiful grounds. It was peaceful, stately, and totally worth the detour, even if I didn’t get inside.

Straight Into London

After soaking in all that history (and snapping some Insta-worthy pics), we cruised into London. The whole drive was smooth, scenic, and stress-free. Shahzid even offered to make additional stops if I wanted a coffee or restroom break. The level of service? Top notch.

He also shared little tidbits about the areas we passed, like which towns have the best weekend markets or road rules, backing up so someone can pass. It was like riding with a knowledgeable local guide who also happened to be an excellent driver.

What Makes Daytrip Different?

There are a few things that set Daytrip apart from other transfer services or even private tour companies:

  • Customized Routes: You can completely tailor your journey. Want to stop at a castle? A vineyard? A charming village? Easy.

  • Private Driver Perks: My driver had water, snacks, and was completely flexible with timing. It was my day, my way.

  • Comfort & Safety: You’re not crammed into a group tour or trying to navigate roundabouts on your own. Just a smooth ride in a clean, comfy car.

  • Affordable Luxury: It’s the sweet spot between renting a car and hiring a private guide, without the stress or high cost.

Who Should Use Daytrip?

This is ideal for:

  • Empty nesters looking to explore without the hassle

  • Multi-generational families who need space and flexibility

  • Solo travelers who want a safe, personal travel day

  • Couples or friend duos who want something between luxe and laid-back

Would I Use It Again?

Without a doubt. I’m already plotting a route through the Cotswolds or maybe down to Bath with Daytrip as my trusty sidekick. The experience was so seamless that it’s now my go-to for travel between cities in Europe.

Pro Tip

If you’re stopping at multiple attractions like I did, Brighton to London via Hever Castle and Chartwell—be realistic about how much time you’ll want at each stop. Know what closing time is. Build in buffer time, especially if you’re a history buff like me who gets carried away (guilty!).

You don’t need to rent a car or be herded around on a bus to explore England in style. Daytrip gives you the freedom of a road trip with the luxury of a private guide. Whether you’re planning a chill travel day or packing in some serious sightseeing, it’s an absolute game-changer.

If you’re traveling from Brighton to London, or anywhere in between, and want to explore the countryside with zero hassle, head over to www.Daytrip.com and start customizing your adventure.

And if you get Shahzad as your driver? Tell him I said Hi! You’re in excellent hands.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
