Prepare For The Flu and Cold Season

February 4, 2015 Rachel Ferrucci 25 Comments

There is nothing worse than when you or someone in the house gets sick with a cold or the flu. Well, actually there is something worse….  not being prepared. If it’s your child or husband the last thing you want to do is run to the store and if it’s you, good luck with hubby getting everything needed. I take one day to go shopping and get everything I need usually when I put up the fall decorations and then again when I take down the Christmas decorations to be sure I’m prepared.

Prepare For Flu and cold season

First and Foremost Prevent

If you work outside the home you know that people don’t stay home when they’re sick. Nobody wants to waste a day off or they’re nervous about taking the day due to the boss getting mad. If you have kids that go to school or daycare they’re battling the germs constantly. Parents today send their kids sick, runny noses, sneezing, coughing, and infested with nastiness. Parents can’t take a day off unless they’re kid is really sick, like with a fever. So basically we’re all sitting ducks. This means we need to do everything we can to prevent getting sick!

  • Wash your hands constantly– This needs to be taught to the kids at an early age
  • Don’t touch your face, especially your mouth and nose – (Did you know that picking your nose can give viruses an express to your system? But that’s another post)
  • Plenty of rest – When you’re tired and worn out, your defenses are down
  • Eat right – Again keep your body healthy to fight off any invasions
  • Drink OJ– My grandmother, my mom, and now I say a glass of OJ helps to keep you healthy. There has been some studies that say it’s not true but I say Bull to these studies. Just drink your juice- it works!!
  • Drink Water– Stay hydrated
  • Don’t eat finger foods at parties- I don’t think doctors will have this on their list but during cold and flu time I stay clear of finger foods. I know I wash my hands constantly but I have no idea what everyone else is up to

Supplies For Preparation

You’ve followed all the steps above but somehow IT, the dreaded virus made its way into your house. No worries because prepare is your middle name……. or it is now!

  • Tissues (6 boxes)- We love Puffs, they are soft and won’t leave your nose red and sore. I have a box in each room so if you feel that sneeze coming on there are tissues in reach and snots aren’t flying.
  • Vicks NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu – Trying to sleep at night is horrible. I usually take a shot (use recommended dosage!) and it kicks the butt of my worse symptoms.
  • Vicks DayQuil Severe Cold & Flu – During the day you still have tasks and there’s not usually time to lay around. My symptoms are relieved and I get through the day.
  • Lysol– I grab spray and wipes. When they leave a room, Sanitize! Don’t forget remotes, phones, doorknobs, and light switches
  • Chicken Soup– Buy all the ingredients for chicken soup and make a big pot. Freeze in small containers and it’s ready in just a few minutes.
  • Straws– If you ever had the flu you know it’s hard to lift your head. We want to keep the kids hydrated so I bendy straw will make drinking easier
  • Throat Lozenges – I try to have some kind of throat lozenges or cough drops on hand
  • Vaporizer/Humidifier – It helps to clear you up and is great to have on while sleeping

Tips:

I love my luxury items but when it comes to everyday items I want a great deal! When going shopping for all your cold and flu supplies, go to Walmart. Not only will you save money with their low prices but it’s very convenient to be able to shop for everything in one store.

Sneezing? Don’t grab a napkin or paper towel, your nose will be sorry later. Have boxes of tissues scattered throughout the house

Teach kids at an early age to throw their tissues out. When they’re sick put a bag beside them for used tissues. Mommy doesn’t do boogie rags.

Don’t add the macaroni to the soup before freezing. Make the macaroni fresh and add to the soup once thawed

I thought that graphic was right on target. We have been very lucky this year without getting the flu shot, hoping it lasts through the spring. Wishing you all well- and drink your OJ LOL

Our family follows all of these suggestions except for not eating finger foods. That’s a great idea though! People have picking at everything on the plate, I’m sure!

It’s crazy how many can be affected. Our area hasn’t been hit too bad this year, but there are some parent’s freaking out because other kids aren’t being vaccinated for anything. Joy of the mountain, I guess. 🙁 Here’s praying we don’t get anything.

I love that weather image! So funny! But you’re right – it’s AWFUL to have to run (or send someone) to the store when you don’t feel well.

The flu is never fun. I battle cold and flu season early on. Since I work from home my immune system isnt what it should be. With a kiddo in elementary and a husband who works at a hospital, germs are consistent around here. My husband is a big fan of DayQuil. I use it only when I have to. Kleenex with lotion is a must for me!

Why did no one warn us that menopause would turn our bodies into a crime scene… Dryness. Pain. Sneezing roulette. UTIs showing up uninvited. And doctors smiling politely and saying, “That’s just aging.” Cool. Love that for us.

Say Hello to Silky Peach Cream 🍑 A bioidentical estriol cream that works locally to rebuild thinning tissue, restore moisture, and bring back comfort where it actually matters. Not a Band-Aid. Not a $350 prescription. Not a lube that disappears by lunchtime.

Estriol is the gentlest form of estrogen our bodies naturally make, and Silky Peach Cream puts it back exactly where menopause took it away. Over time, tissue rebuilds, moisture returns, and suddenly intimacy doesn’t feel like sandpaper and regret.

Two pumps nightly. Then maintenance. Because it took years to get this dry… it’s okay if it takes a little time to feel normal again.

I’m done whispering about menopause. I got my life back. And my peach is happy again!

I didn’t expect this to be the hardest part of getting older.

If sex hurts. If you avoid intimacy. If you dread wiping.

It’s not “just dryness.” It’s estrogen loss. And yes, it’s fixable.

Menopause doesn’t ease in quietly. It shows up hot, uncomfortable, and disruptive. And for way too long, women are told to whisper about it or accept it as “just aging.” I’m done with that.

Silky Peach Cream helped restore moisture, rebuild thinning tissue, and bring back comfort where menopause took it away. Not a quick fix. Not a Band-Aid. Just real, gradual relief that made me feel like myself again.

Two pumps. Some patience. And a lot less suffering.

Stop whispering about menopause. You deserve relief. You deserve joy. Your peach deserves to be happy again.

In paid partnership with #NoPainPact and with the support of #VoicesforNonOpioidChoices.

When I found out I needed surgery, my 1st thought wasn’t the procedure. It was the fear of being handed opioids again with no real choice. After my last surgery, opioids were the only option I had, my insurance didn’t cover the non-opioid alternatives I specifically asked for. That showed me how quickly exposure can happen. Many people don’t realize that about 1 in 10 patients who receive opioids after surgery will struggle with long-term use. That’s nearly 4 million people per year. It’s no secret that opioids can lead to addiction, & we should be much louder about the fact that there are non opioid options that can be used during surgery to manage pain afterwards.
Medicare already recognizes this & separately reimburses for FDA-approved non-opioid pain treatments, proving these options are real & available. Yet insurance barriers often make them difficult or impossible to access. Instead of making decisions about my recovery with my doctor, insurance policy made them for me. As I prepare for my next surgery, I want access to every option that reduces my exposure. I know how easily things can escalate. I’ve seen opioid use continue far longer than intended. It can tear apart families before anyone realizes what’s happening. What starts as short-term pain management after surgery becomes something no one ever expected, simply because safer options were never offered. It’s frustrating that some major insurers still haven’t expanded coverage the way Medicare has. #UnitedHealthcare is one of the companies whose restrictions make it harder to access FDA-approved non-opioid surgical pain options. Because of their size, these decisions affect millions. Surgery shouldn’t be a gateway to opioid addiction. Medicare covers these options. UnitedHealthcare & others need to do the same so patients aren’t pushed toward opioids by outdated policies. Patients & families deserve better.
