Roc Solid Foundation, is once again rallying communities across the country with its national Play Defeats Cancer Tour, an initiative focused on one powerful idea: giving kids fighting cancer a safe place to play when life feels anything but normal. Through this ongoing effort, the nonprofit is building nearly 80 backyard playsets and playhouses for children currently undergoing cancer treatment, bringing moments of joy directly to families who need them most.
For these families, play is not just play. It is relief. It is routine. It is a small piece of childhood returned during a time dominated by hospital visits, treatments, and uncertainty.
Why Backyard Play Matters for Kids Fighting Cancer
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their world changes overnight. Public playgrounds, birthday parties, and school recess often disappear due to compromised immune systems. For many children in treatment, leaving the house is not an option.
Roc Solid Foundation steps in by transforming backyards into safe, germ free spaces where kids can just be kids again.
Each family selected through the Play Defeats Cancer Tour receives either a Backyard Discovery Woodland Swing Set or a Timberlake Playhouse, generously provided by Backyard Discovery, a leader in outdoor play. What makes these builds especially meaningful is how they happen. Volunteers come together in each community to assemble the playsets, turning build days into celebrations of support, hope, and connection.
It is not just about what is being built. It is about who shows up to build it.
A Mission Rooted in Lived Experience
Roc Solid Foundation was founded by Eric Newman, a pediatric cancer survivor who understands firsthand how isolating childhood cancer can be. What began as a personal mission has grown into a nationwide nonprofit that has supported more than 20,000 children and families across the United States.
“When a child is diagnosed with cancer, they usually cannot play in public spaces due to their compromised immune systems during treatment,” Newman explains. “Backyard playsets provide kids with a safe place to play, but they also offer an escape from the harsh reality of fighting cancer.”
That escape matters more than most of us realize. Play becomes therapy. It becomes freedom. It becomes a reminder that childhood does not disappear just because life gets hard.
More Than Playsets, Real Support for Families
While backyard builds are the most visible part of Roc Solid’s work, the foundation’s support begins much earlier. Through partnerships with more than 160 children’s hospitals nationwide, Roc Solid Foundation distributes Ready Bags to families immediately following a pediatric cancer diagnosis.
These Ready Bags include essentials families often need during unexpected hospital stays, such as toiletries, blankets, journals, tablets, and other comfort items. It is a simple idea with an enormous emotional impact. In the coming year, Roc Solid plans to distribute thousands of Ready Bags to families facing the unthinkable.
