The women in my life are important!
Cancer is far beyond a disease that can sometimes be curable. It consumes the lives of the patient, turning their entire world upside down not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t end with the patient; the lives of family, friends, and loved ones are swallowed up and consumed by the disease. Almost anyone you talk to has been affected by cancer in one way or another. While modern medicine has progressed by leaps and bounds, early detection remains the best defense against breast cancer.
Please be sure to do a self-exam regularly. Here are some tips:
- Make it a habit! Maybe every Monday when you get in bed or on the day you make your car payment, find something that will help you remember and do it often. Before you know it, the habit will be formed, and you won’t have to think about it.
- Have a BFF day once a month. Get together, do your exams, open a bottle of wine, and celebrate friendship.
- Talk to your daughters! Start talking about it at a young age, and by the time they need to complete a self-exam, it won’t feel funny to talk about.
- Ask friends and family if they’ve done it; this will become a normal conversation.
- Get your husband involved, ask him to help remind you…. and check himself too!

About P&G’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign:
One in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. One in eight. That is equivalent to an inner circle of girlfriends or the women in an extended family. While breast cancer rates are lower among non-Caucasian women, death rates are higher among African American and Latina women. In fact, every hour and a half, a Latina woman dies of breast cancer in the United States.
Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher the survival rate. In fact, when detected during the early (localized) stage – the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.*
This year, the P&G Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign has partnered with The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to educate not only women but also the men in their lives, about the importance of early detection. Ladies, you can help save lives by spreading the message that early detection is the best defense in the fight against breast cancer and creating and following an early detection plan while encouraging others to do the same. Gentlemen, this October, decide when your “day of action” will be and encourage the women in your life to take action and create an early detection plan.
