Peace of mind at the holidays

December 19, 2021 Rachel Ferrucci

This post was sponsored by Window Covering Safety Council as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

I love the holiday season. It brings joy, memories, and lots of time with the entire family. I am like a little kid myself as Christmas gets closer. I absolutely love the hustle and bustle of cooking, decorating, shopping, wrapping, and most of all hosting parties.
Christmas Eve I know I’ll get to see cousins, aunts, uncles, and my kids and grandchildren. As an empty nester, I have to be aware when the grandchildren are here because my house is no longer “kid proof,” especially now that the grandkids are not crawling. I do however, want to make sure my house is as safe as possible for other children that come over.
Parents and grandparents may always have an eye on the kids but we also can be easily distracted and with kids curiosity, they often get into things they shouldn’t.
Remember……it only takes a second for a child to get hurt.
Here are quick safety checks for the holidays to keep the little ones as safe as possible.
·      Make sure any exposed outlets are covered.
·      Make sure any extension cords are tucked behind or under something so the kids can’t tug at them.
·      Remember to announce when you’re opening the oven and keep an eye out for pitter patter heading for the oven.
·      Keep any lit candles out of the reach of the kids.
·      Make sure there are no cleaning supplies out and you may want to tie that cabinet in the kitchen and/or bathroom which holds them.
·      Make sure your TV is secure so it doesn’t tip over onto a child
·      Check your window coverings for exposed or dangling cords, ‎which can pose a hazard to infants and young children and replace them ‎with cordless products!

If your blinds still have cords, this is a great time to update them. Cordless blinds are so much prettier than the corded ones, so you’ll also be updating your décor. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded window coverings are ‎one of the top hidden hazards in American homes.‎ You can easily identify the window coverings with cordless options by the Best for Kids™ certification label. Best for Kids products are currently available at all major retailers across the country!

I went from corded blinds to cordless. Let’s face it, the struggle is real with corded blinds, They are usually crooked, you have to swing the cord across the room to pull it in order to get it up or down, and the cat goes after the cord and once actually got tangled in the cord. It was scary to know that these corded hazards could also be a danger to my kitten. My fairly new cordless blinds are beautiful! I simply grab ahold of the bottom and lift or pull down ease. I can do it with one finger. Try THAT with a cord. I can also pull it down from the top, depending where the sun is. I know you will love them too!

Keep safety on top of your mind this holiday and remove hidden hazards in your home. Check off each hazard in our list and install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with ‎young children.‎ If you cannot buy new window coverings, be sure all cords are out of reach.

“The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC), founded in 1994, is a coalition of major U.S. manufacturers, importers and retailers of window coverings dedicated to educating consumers about window covering cord safety. WCSC urges the use of only cordless products in homes with infants and young children.”

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
