If you’re a parent, you’re likely sick of watching your children spend every holiday break, weekend or summer vacation with their face glued to a device. Call us old, but we remember actually spending time outside as kids!
Whether you’re trying to pry your child from video games and YouTube, or your kid is a thrill-seeker who already loves the outdoors and is looking for a new adventure, there are all sorts of fun, engaging, enriching and exciting outdoor activities to do with them this summer that are guaranteed to please! We’ve detailed a few below:
Skate Park
Skate parks are cropping up all over the place these days; they’re no longer just for the big city. You’re likely to find a thriving and fun skate community in your area no matter where you live! Check it out with your kid, and you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised to find guys and girls ranging in age from 5-6 (hopefully equipped with proper safety gear, which you can find for all ages/sizes) all the way up to adults who still love the sport. You’ll find that the skating community is a friendly, charming and supportive atmosphere with people who are genuinely thrilled to be out on the boards, who help each other, cheer each other on and keep each other safe.
Best of all, joining the local skate park is free! The only costs involved are getting your kid a skateboard and safety equipment!
Charter Fishing
Whether you live near a coast or you’re heading to the beach for a summer vacation, you might be wanting to get some fishing in. And sometimes, just fishing along a lake or stream or even out on a boat isn’t enough; you want more of a thrilling fishing experience.
Charter fishing is a great idea for all ages. What is a fishing charter? Charter fishing involves signing on with a company that will provide you with an all-inclusive deep sea/ocean fishing experience. You sign up for a particular fishing package and then join up – it’s almost like a guided tour of sorts, but for sea fishing.
These are a great idea for people who don’t have expensive boats and deep sea fishing equipment, who are just in town for a short time, or want to brush up on their fishing skills with a guide in tow. Tours are usually pretty affordable, depending on what package you go for, and so much fun.
Cycling
Sure, lots of kids already ride bikes, but there’s so much more to the world of cycling than just riding up and down the cul-de-sac. Cycling groups are cropping up all over the place, many of them all-ages, and no-drop and beginner groups that are great for young people and novices. In addition to bike groups, many towns and cities have year-round cycling events such as charity rides, benefit rides, beach rides, mountain biking and DMX group rides, and so much more.
Cycling is a great way to stay physically active and build self-esteem, and can be a very social activity if you join a group.
These three exciting activities will have your thrill-seeking child outdoors all summer long. What video games?
