The capital of South Africa, this beautiful port city is situated on the southwest coast. Overlooked by the stunning Table Mountain, it sits proudly on the peninsula. Cape Town has everything. It boasts mountains, golden beaches, vineyards and a thriving city.
Whether you spend a week at Cape Town or just a day, there is plenty to enjoy. Many companies, such as Imagine Cruising South Africa, provide an opportunity to explore this city. Make the most of your trip by taking in the following destinations.
Table Mountain
One of the best ways to appreciate Table Mountain is by Cable Car. The views from here of the city and busy harbor are unsurpassed. You’ll find countless photo opportunities. The more energetic among you may prefer to hike up the mountain. There are many beautiful trails to follow. And if you like the outdoor life, why not stay a few nights in one of the campsites.
Robben Island
No trip to Cape Town is complete without a trip to the notorious Robben Island. This is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for eighteen years. You can take a ferry to the island; boats run several times a day during peak season. To make the most of your visit, hire a tour guide who will provide you with an insight into the island’s history. Tours usually culminate with a visit to Nelson Mandela’s prison cell.
Go To The Beaches
When it comes to beaches, you will be spoiled for choice. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle, try Beta Beach, Oudekraal, or Smitswinkelbaai. Beta Beach is only ten minutes from the city. However, it is shielded by boulders which makes it ideal for swimming and quiet sunbathing.
For something a little bit different, visit the penguins at Boulder’s Beach. Known as ‘jackass penguins’ due to their braying, they provide a welcome detour. Or, travel to Gansbaii, to try some shark cage diving. Gansbaii is known throughout the world for its white shark population. In fact, a quarter of the world’s shark species can be found in South Africa.
Shopping For Souvenirs
Leave some room in your suitcase for African souvenirs. Gifts and mementos are well-priced, and there are plenty of places to shop. The Pan African Market is situated on Long Street and boasts a massive range of arts and crafts. Make sure you haggle to get the best deal. Greenmarket Square on the corner of Shortmarket and Burg Street is great for African folk art and souvenir clothing. The square itself is worth visiting due to its notable architecture. If you’re looking for gifts, Baraka is your place. Located in Cape Quarter, it has everything from baskets to African masks.
Cape Winelands
About an hour’s drive from Cape Town you will find the Cape Winelands. Here you will find several wine regions and vineyards. They offer great value for money with some bottles priced at under $5. Enjoy beautiful sunsets and lots of tastings under a backdrop of the mountains. There are also many bistros and restaurants to enjoy along the way. Here, you can sample the wine and enjoy the local cuisine.
