The Mary Poppins Returns red carpet movie premiere in LA was an amazing experience, I also interviewed the cast, including Emily Blunt(Mary), Min-Manueal Miranda (Jack), Ben Whishaw (Michael Banks) & Emily Mortimer (Jane Banks), Director Rob Marshall, and the adorable children Pixie Davies (“Anabel Banks”) & Joel Dawson (“Georgie Banks”) that I’m sharing today!
MARY POPPINS RETURNS OPENS IN THEATERS ON DECEMBER 19TH
I usually find it difficult to interview kids because I feel like they’re “trained” with talking points and you don’t get to see the real child in them. This was NOT the case with these two whipper snappers! They showed so much excitement and told us exactly how they felt during the making of this film. I also loved hearing their accents, I wanted to take them both home.
They first spoke about the chase part of the animation sequence.
Pixie said, “That was so much fun. It was, because the music was being played, I actually felt like we were actually in a chase and it was really awesome.” When she saw it after it was completed she thought, “it was really surprising because you don’t know all the details that are gonna be there, and then you watch it and it’s there.”
Joel’s favorite part of filming the movie was when he had to dive through the bushes and then got dragged along by the kite. He thought that was a really fun scene.
When Pixie found out she was going to be in the film she thought she was going to burst! Wouldn’t we all!
What was the kids favorite song?
Joel’s was Underneath the London Sky and Pixie’s was Tripping the Light Fantastic, because it’s really fun and dancey. I’ll add you do want to get up and dance when you hear it!
What happens in-between filming?
Pixie said, We had tutoring a lot, which was, it was okay, it was tutoring. But we had quite a lot of fun. We had tents, and there was a place that was the most magical place on earth. There was lots of food and it was great.
Joel added, I remember one day they had a chocolate water fountain with marshmallows and cookies, and strawberries.
There was loads of fun surprises like that. And you were just like oh okay, wow, said Pixie.
Sounds to me like they made sure the kids were well taken care of!
The older actors taught the kids.
Just be yourself, do what you think is right, and then if you get a note, then you get a note. It’s okay.
Was it scary or fun to work on the crane scenes where you were flying?
Very, fun, very, very fun.
What advice would you give other kids that want to go into acting?
Pixie: If you really want to pursue it then just do, because honestly it’s the greatest feeling when you’re on set, and it just gives you that buzz.
Joel: Business is business.
I’m totally stealing that line!
Was there anything you wanted to take from the set if you could’ve?
Joel: If it was really magical, I would take the bath.
I imagine every kid and most adults would want a bath like that!
Besides Mary Poppins, what’s your favorite Disney movie?
Pixie: I really like The Little Mermaid and The Aristocats, and Saving Mr. Banks because it’s fun seeing it all behind the scenes. I like Pocahontas. I like all the Disney movies, like the classic Disney movies.
When you see Mary Poppins Returns, you will fall in love with these three amazing young actors and I’m sure you’ll agree just how talented they are!
