This is a part of our STAR WARS: The Last Jedi series which opens in theaters on December 15, 2017. As a reminder we partnered with Disney on this series to give you the holiday magic at Disneyland, and the insiders view of the Star Wars” The Last Jedi press junket. All opinions are mine alone.
While at the press junket I had the opportunity to interview the cast of the movie. Since everything about this movie was top secret and under tight wraps, we weren’t able to ask much about the movie but we did get to talk about the characters personally as well as their fashion.
Laura Derm is no stranger to the big screen. You may remember her from Twin Peaks, Big Little Lies, Jurassic Park, and many others. Now that she is a part of one of the biggest films, Star Wars! Like us, Laura waited in line for the original Star Wars and was a huge fan. On set she needed to have her “fan freakout”as did most of the others and put in perspective that she was now a part of this world. Laura told us how she actually balled when Chewbacca surprised her by coming up to her.
I Get It!!! It IS Chewy!!!!
When it comes to the women in this film, they all have big shoes to fill. Carrie Fisher made Princess Leia have a huge impact on little girls and women alike everywhere. We saw a powerful smart woman who can be a trendsetter with fashion and still kick major ass. Her hairstyles gave braids a come back with a twist. Braids were worn in two buns, across the top of your head as a crown and doubled up in a pony tail. She was a true trendsetter.
Laura too, looked up to Carrie Fisher and knows the important role Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo plays in this film.
.It was incredible to have the privilege of collaborating on who she is and how to present a powerful woman. I really appreciated Rian and Kathy Kennedy and all of our Producers to allow a powerful Female Character and also, her physicality to be Feminine. I thought that was wonderful and I feel excited to join this amazing legacy of strong Females in Space starting with our magnificent icon of Princess Leia.
We asked Laura Derm: Without giving anything away, can you tell us about your character?
I’ve got purple hair. There’s a new boss in town. I have arrived in the Resistance and I am a Vice Admiral, and that’s pretty much all I can tell you.
I can tell you how amazing it was to be inside Rian’s head. It was incredible to have the privilege of collaborating on who [Holdo] is and how to present a powerful woman. ………………………….. I feel excited to join this amazing legacy of strong females in space starting with our magnificent icon of Princess Leia.
Were you excited to see the newest released photos of Vice Admiral Holdo?
My mother’s very excited about the purple hair. She loves the look and the costume. My daughter was like I didn’t know you got jewelry in space. I said yes, Holdo gets jewelry in space and nail coloring in space.
Do you think little girls are going to want to emulate the strong women in Star Wars? What’s that going to bring to the whole franchise?
It’s just incredible. That’s so exciting. I know what Leia was for me and I know what she was for all of you.
It wasn’t just her strength in some super heroic way but in the deeply human way that Carrie Fisher so incredibly embodied this fearless, irreverent, sassy, bold, vulnerable female. And hold all things to be true and powerful and kick-butt…all of those things were in one character!
Admiral Holdo will be a trendsetter and you will see her style hitting mainstream. She is a strong powerful woman who stays feminine. This is rare with strong woman characters. They’re either dressed as a man or with something tight and barely covering them. Holdo wears a beautiful cold shoulder dress that flows showing her femininity. The back drapes beautifully almost creating a cape (like a superhero). The fabric around her wrists resemble large gold cuffs. Her inverted bob with soft waves frames her face giving her a softer look but her mauve color says I am powerful and eccentric matching her personality.
Every woman need accessories!
Amilyn Holdo wears what looks like a large silver ornate hair accessory in the crown of her head (we’ll know more next week and update) and although in the movie she doesn’t swing a light saber IF she were to have to one, her light saber would be rainbow! Her bold nails and large ring make a statement.

Bill Sweeney says
Carrie Fisher was THE trend-setter when Star Wars came out, both style and acting. Back when the original trilogy came out, there weren’t many actresses who acted with such passion. She will be surely missed. It’s great that many women have been given more prominent roles in the new Star Wars movie.
