When I booked our Key West vacation, I had envisioned beaches, pina colada’s, and sunglasses. I thought this would be a chill vacation, time to relax or at least try to. Those that know me, know the word relax isn’t in my vocabulary. As we lay on the beach I gazed out at the crystal blue water, I watched as a line of jet ski’s went by and thought how much fun it must be to be out there. I was then told that Barefoot Billy’s, home of the island jet ski tour, was literally on the property of Casa Marina where we were staying! Of course I now had to get more information from Dan, who was pampering me all day! Dan told me about all the different adventures I could go on over at Barefoot Billy’s and I was all too ready to do them all!
We booked our 2 hour guided tour and showed up the next day ready to jump on the Yamaha Waverunners and cruise around the island for 28 miles! Mike, Billy’s brother, would be our guide for this one and I was happy to hear that because I was a little nervous since I haven’t actually rode a jet ski by myself….ever! We were given a safety class explaining everything we needed to do and what each hand signal meant.
We got to cruise around to get the feel of the jet ski and then we were off. I was afraid to give it full throttle and concentrated as I followed Mike and tried to stay in his path so I didn’t hit any wake’s. A cruise ship came out of nowhere and it gave us a quick lesson in managing the wakes…. It made me a little nervous but I realized I wasn’t going to tip over and I could ram it up a bit. In just a few minutes I was comfortable and starting taking in the view. There were no boats out, just the five of us on jet skies speeding through the Caribbean waters. Seeing the island from the water was amazing. Mike would point out different points of interest, such as The Southernmost Point, Historic Key West Bight, and Sunset Key.
We stopped on a sandbar out in the middle of the ocean and we were able to jump off and I grabbed a couple shells for mementos. On our way to the Gulf Mike took us through a path of mangroves. It was like a scene from Miami Vice and one of the coolest things I’ve experienced. Next stop was the Gulf- A MAY ZING! Mike gave us time to go play or we could even take a dip. I’m more a Veruca Salt, I want it all, so I hopped off into the bath like crystal clear water. The only thing I was missing was a glass of wine. I floated, flipped, swam, and frolicked in the water. I then jumped back on my jet ski and gave it all I had, a couple 360’s, chasing a school of fish, riding toward the sun into the sunset, and wishing I had a video camera with me so I can relive every moment. We then headed back to the Atlantic and back to our shore.
Going to Key West is a must and Billy’s is …….well Billy’s IS Key West! They have so many adventures you can do-there’s something for everyone!
