People always say don’t judge a book by its cover and to some extent, that’s true. But the thing is, the way that you dress and the clothes that you choose to wear say a lot about you and they have a big impact on your thought processes. You might not have thought about it that much before but there is a huge amount of psychology involved in our fashion choices than most of us realize. Here’s how your clothes affect your outlook on life.
Dress For Success
You might get a bit tired of dressing in smart clothes for work every day and think that it would be far easier if you could just wear something comfortable. People think that they would work more effectively if they were in more comfortable clothes but the science says otherwise. Studies show that when we wear smart clothes, it changes our frame of mind. It puts you in the right frame of mind for hard work and increases your confidence around the workplace. That means you’ll be more motivated when you’re at work and you’ll conduct yourself better in meetings etc.
Casual Clothes
While formal clothes are ideal for work, they’re counterproductive when you’re trying to socialize. Wearing formal clothes tends to make it harder for people to relax and open up, especially in social situations. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear something nice but you’re better off with something less formal from somewhere like Fresh Soul instead of your work clothes. Studies show that when people are in their casual going out clothes, they’re more likely to socialize with new people and open up about themselves than they would be in their work clothes because they have a different mindset. Casual clothes also improve our creativity so in some workplaces, they’re actually better than formal business wear.
Gym Clothes
Most people think that the function of gym clothes is just to stop your normal clothes from getting sweaty. That’s important, of course, but there’s more to it than that. When you’re wearing gym clothes, your mindset is altered and you’re far more likely to exercise for longer than if you’d just been wearing any old T-shirt. In fact, research suggests that just by carrying gym clothes in your bag, you’re more motivated to exercise and you’re far more likely to hit the gym after work than you would be if you had to go home and get your stuff first.
Uniforms
People often complain about having to wear a uniform for work but it actually serves an important purpose. When people see somebody wearing a uniform, it gives them a certain expectation about the duty that person should fulfill. This mentality also carries over to you while you’re working and makes you feel more a part of the company. That means you’ll be more aware of what your duties are and what’s expected of you, meaning that you’ll work harder.
Next time you get dressed, think about what effect your wardrobe choices are having on your mind.
