Are you wondering if you love your cat more than they love you? Forming a bond with your feline friend takes time and effort, but doing so is very rewarding. Our guide looks at some of the most effective ways to improve your relationship with your cat.
Increase interactive playtime
One way to strengthen the relationship you have with your cat is to engage in interactive play. As they are highly skilled predators, your moggy will jump at the chance to express their natural hunting behaviour.
From stalking to chasing and pouncing, allow them to attack makeshift prey in whatever way they see fit. Great ideas include using fishing rods to get them to climb up cat trees, using a laser pointer on the walls, and placing dry food in a puzzle feeder. This releases ‘feel good’ hormones in your cat which they will associate with you.
Respect their boundaries
Due to their independent nature, owners can often overwhelm their cats if they fail to recognise their boundaries or warning signs. It’s always best to start with gentle strokes and work your way up to cuddles if they seem receptive.
Kittens that feel comfortable around you are more likely to come back for more. Make sure to avoid areas such as their feet, tail, or underbelly without building up enough trust.
Help with grooming
Cats are highly clean creatures and you’ll find them grooming themselves often. This means that they generally enjoy brushing but you must use the right type for their hair. For example, metal combs are useful for short-haired cats whereas long-haired cats benefit more from a slicker brush with fine teeth.
Our furry companions also thrive off a structured routine as it makes them feel secure. Brushing at similar times each week should help you bond with your cat better – just be careful when it comes to bathing!
Provide a comfortable environment
For your furry friend to even think about giving you the time of day, they need to feel comfortable in their home. This must include a clean litter tray, multiple hiding spots, and scratching posts. If cats aren’t able to display their natural instincts, not only do they suffer, but you and your home will too.
Where possible, aim to give them their own room or at least a space in the home that is set up specifically for them. That way, it gives them control over when they feel ready to work on your dynamic.
