When it comes to purchasing clothes, it is easy to play it safe. Neutrals are easy to wear, easy to accessorize, and they look universally great—right?
Well, not always. Yes, neutrals are easy to sport, but they will never do as much for you as selecting the right color will. And that leads you to another dilemma: Which color is the right color for you?
Wearing the right color will change the way you look. It will make your eyes brighter, make the natural highlights in your hair pop, and even make you seem brighter and more awake. Without evening needing to use makeup, it will help to hide your imperfections.
If you aren’t sure which colors are for you, below is a basic guide that will help you get started.
Determine Your Undertone
Think of your undertone as the color underneath the color of your skin. Your undertone can be either warm, cool, or neutral, and it doesn’t matter how dark or how pale you are. To determine your undertone, look at the veins in your wrist. If they look blue to purple, your undertone is cool. If they look greenish, your undertone is warm. And if you see a mix of both, your undertone is neutral.
Think About the Undertones in Colors
Just like your skin, the colors in clothing have undertones as well, either warm or cool. Your warm undertones will have a hint of yellow while cool undertones will have a hint of blue. And, of course, there are your neutrals, though once you start thinking about them, you will discover that they aren’t as neutral as you had thought.
Think About Your Skin Tone
There are just three undertones, but there are many different skin tones. When it comes to wearing color, you generally will want to contrast your skin’s tone enough that it helps brighten in, but not so much that it crosses over to washing it out.
And Select Your Color
If you have a warm undertone, go for warm colors. If you have a cool undertone, go for cool colors. And if your undertone is neutral, everything is game. Once you have this much narrowed down, you have to experiment to find the right brightness for your tone. Once you find it, you have your perfect color.
