How Comfort Affects Bonding Activities

September 9, 2021 Rachel Ferrucci

Bonding with friends or with your family is a wonderful thing you can do to strengthen your relationship. A lot of people naturally grow apart over time for a variety of reasons. Whether you develop different interests or learn to find entertainment without your loved ones, bonding activities can help bring you together.

However, there’s also a dark side to bonding hobbies. Indeed, sometimes things can backfire dramatically. In essence, bonding is the act of creating emotional comfort through activity. But if the program you’ve planned takes people too much out of their emotional or physical comfort zone, it can be a recipe for disaster. While we often hear the tale of going out of our comfort zone as a sign of courage, there is more to it than meets the eye. Going out of your comfort zone willingly is something you choose to do to challenge yourself. You can learn a valuable lesson through the process. Yet, regardless of the outcome, you are the one who decides to endure a lack of emotional or physical comfort for personal growth. When the decision is made on your behalf, as it can happen with poorly planned bonding schedules, it can forever affect the relationship.

#1. A family road trip over the weekend

Nothing says meaningful family time like a weekend road trip together. You could make the most of the last summer days to plan a camping trip, sleeping in the woods at night, and visiting the surrounding area during the day. Family road trips can be a lot of fun, especially if you encourage everyone to be spontaneous. Trying something new is exciting. Your kids will love waking up to birds’ songs and trying out fishing for the first time. Yet, the most important element of a successful road trip is the vehicle. You don’t want passengers to get uncomfortable in the car. Feeling stuck on the back seat, surrounded by bags that don’t fit anywhere else, is not exactly an enjoyable experience. Small and confined spaces, such as an adventure car with a tiny interior can make passengers feel nauseous and short-tempered. In other words, if you are planning to purchase your next vehicle in the hope of planning many family road trips, you’d better click here to compare some of the favorite adventure cars in terms of interior volume. A roomy vehicle is your best choice for a spontaneous holiday on the road.

#2. Families that eat together stay together

Family dinners have become a rare occurrence during the pandemic. But it’s time to relaunch the tradition. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, a meaningful milestone, or simply the joy of seeing each other, bringing your family around the dining table could do wonders for your relationships. You can also discover unexpected benefits, such as finding mental health relief through togetherness or improving your physical health with a nutritious meal together. But family dinners can also backfire if you are not careful. First of all, it’s not easy to get your whole family around the table. If you have a large family, you might find that things might feel a little cramped. Ultimately, nobody will enjoy a dinner where they have to balance a plate on their lap or sit uncomfortably by the table’s foot. Additionally, forgetting dietary requirements can also affect the mood. Most US households have someone with diet restrictions in the family. Let’s be honest: Forgetting that Aunt Betty avoids gluten could damage your bonding efforts.

#3. Discovering new countries together

Traveling together is all about sharing experiences and encouraging each other to overcome challenges and fears. Travel creates a unique bond. But it’s not right for everyone. As mentioned earlier, the problem is not about going out of your comfort zone but forcing someone else to follow your path. Your travel buddy could feel negative about facing difficult and embarrassing situations as part of the travel experience. Perhaps, their idea of travel was a peaceful afternoon on a tropical beach. But if you’re taking them trekking through the Nepalese mountains instead, they may perceive your bonding exercise as unnecessary torture.

#4. A gym buddy keeps you motivated

Fitness experts recommend finding a friend to keep you motivated when you hit the gym. You can plan to work out together and keep each other accountable. As a general rule of thumb, fitness buddying is highly effective, and it even makes your friendship stronger. However, there’s an essential rule when it comes to finding the perfect fitness buddy. If you are going to train together, you should have similar fitness levels. It can be exhausting to find a buddy who’s much more active and mobile than you are. You’ll feel that you constantly need to give 110% and overcome physical limitations. While a little challenge can be a good thing, when the fitness difference between two friends is too big, it can make one of them dread physical activity. Training at a much higher level puts you at risk of injuries and extreme fatigue, as your body needs longer to recover. Additionally, it can be painful, so you could subconsciously associate your gym buddy with the gym pain.

#5. A phone call between friends or relatives

Nothing like a regular phone call to catch up with the latest news. When you’re too busy to see each other, a phone call can restore your bond. However, there’s an essential phone etiquette to follow. For a start, however tempting it might be to call someone when you’re bored in the middle of the day, you might want to refrain. Be aware of their schedule. Most people are uncomfortable about receiving calls during work hours. They might pick up because they think it’s something urgent, but that doesn’t mean they’re free to talk. Understanding how to read subtle phone cues can prevent many issues. For instance, it’s a good idea to check if you are not disturbing them. Don’t be hurt if they try to get rid of your call quickly; it might be a bad time for a catchup call. Ultimately, poorly timed calls can be distressing for the caller when they’re told it’s a bad time and for the callee when they can’t hang up quickly. The bottom line: Calling friends and relatives is a delicate art that can affect your relationship dramatically if you’re not careful.

In conclusion, there’s a dark side to bonding. Done well, it brings people together. But if you get it wrong, it could damage the relationship. Bond with care!

I didn’t realize how much poor sleep was affecting my trips… until I fixed it.

Waking up tired, adjusting to new places, different beds, time zones… it adds up fast.

Traveling with the AirMini changed that for me. It’s compact, simple, and makes it easy to stay consistent no matter where I am.

Now I actually feel like I’m experiencing my trips, not just getting through them.

#ad No one tells you that your skin doesn’t just “age”… it changes.

Dryness, dullness, fine lines, that crepey texture… it’s not just time. It’s hormonal.

I kept layering on creams thinking I just needed something “better,” but nothing was actually addressing what was going on underneath.

M4 from @myalloy is different. It’s prescription skincare made specifically for hormonal skin, using topical estriol to help restore collagen, hydration, and elasticity right where your skin needs it.

It doesn’t enter your bloodstream. It works at the skin level. And honestly… it just makes sense.
