This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of The J.M. Smucker Company. The opinions and text are all mine. I’m partnering with Folgers® at Walmart through the Share A Cup & A Story campaign, to create personal connections with Veterans and honor their service to our country.
I love to hear stories from older family members. I feel like we have a specific view of our elders and their stories about their life always amaze me. I love sit with my Pop, he is my superhero, and his stories sound like they’re from a novel. When it came to me, my Pop acted as if I was perfect and I could do no wrong. As I got older, stories were told more in depth about life and what he encountered in his nine decades. Our favorite story time was when we had “coffee and…….”, we would sit at the table sipping our coffee talking for hours.
It was fitting that I made a pot of Folgers® Classic Roast for these classic stories. I knew my Pop was in the service and was a part of WWII but until recently I didn’t know the details. At 18 years old my Pop landed in Normandy on the 5th of June 1944, the day before D-Day. He was a part of a demolition team assigned to knock out German fortifications on the beach to prepare it for the Allied soldiers to land. They headed in on their vessel with rough seas all through the night. Other vessels were also heading in, all with young guys just out of high school. 60-inch cannon-fire from other ships were going over his head along with rockets. He saw many people die in that one night and days to come, but he was determined to finish his job and get home. My Pop shocks me as he tells the story because he chuckles that he wasn’t supposed to come back, internally they were called the suicide squad!
Every time he tells the story with a little more detail, my mouth just lays open in disbelief. It’s hard to imagine that this sweet fragile superhero of mine is one of the strongest men I’ll ever know. Through all that he did and saw, he is so proud of his service to our country and I’m so proud of him!
My Pop’s stories make me so proud of him, but they have also taught me that we really can overcome anything. Our veterans, and those serving our country, should always be respected, and we should be very grateful for what they did and still do for us.
I also know that we should make the time to sit with family and friends over a cup of Folgers and listen. Thanks to Folgers Classic Roast, we can create quality time and make memories that we’ll cherish forever.
Create A Moment

I see with my dad that the thing he wants most is someone to talk to. Retirement is a lot of fun, but it can be lonely. A cup of coffee and a good chat are a great way to honor people.

My great uncle served in the military too. I don’t know much about his war experiences because I was still young when he passed away. Your Pops is a great man. He was so brave to enlist and go to war at 18 years old. Wow! I would love to sit and hear his stories over a cup of coffee!

He is a great man and is worthy to be emulated by our youth! I can’t believe he was only 18 when he landed in Normandy. Such bravery and courage! Please do give him a hug for me to thank him for his service.
