Divorce is a strong word and brings along strong emotions for both the man and the woman. When there are children involved, it makes it that much harder. Children have so many questions and often won’t ask either parent for fear that they are actually the cause of the divorce. They may also feel that neither parent loves them, that the child is going through the divorce.
The child’s world is turning up side down, their living arrangement may change, they’re with only one parent at a time, and many other factors come into play.
We are extremely close with our nephews and when their parents went through a divorce they were at our house almost every weekend with their mom. We’re also the best aunt and uncle so we also took our nephews as much as possible (Just to brag a bit). I admired their mom because she never talked negatively about her soon to be ex and really tried to keep the boys on a regular schedule to keep some normalcy in their life. Our house was the fun house so there was never a question about coming here 🙂
We tried to talk with the boys to let them know we would always be here for them and of course their mom and dad talked to them too. I recently was given “This Love Is Forever” book by author, Mavis Prall Cohen. The book is perfect for children and parents to read together. It’s fairly short so if parents couldn’t stand to be in the same room, it would only take about 15 minutes. However, the book could help the child open up to a conversation after wards. The book shows the child that they are still loved and explains how life has changed and most important, tells how it’s not the child’s fault.
It’s illustrated in a happy childish tone. It’s a book a child could relate to through words and pictures. The illustrations of the book were actually created by the authors daughter Lizzie Prall who herself went through this as a young child when her parents got a divorce.
As friends, we’re always there for friends who are going through this life changing event but how wonderful would it be to grab this book for under $10.00! If you’re a parent going through a divorce, this would be an excellent resource to read with your child.
Divorce is hard enough, let’s help the kids go through it easier!
