Tradition dictates that you should purchase Christmas presents for your children’s teachers and coaches, but this purchase is often the most difficult of the holiday season. Unlike friends, family, or even coworkers, we generally do not know the likes, dislikes, or needs of our children’s teachers and coaches all that well. Because of this, most parents stick to the classic: teacher-themed trinkets, sweet treats, and coffee mugs.
The problem? After a few years in the field, they have enough of these to last a lifetime. So instead of going for these standard gifts, opt for something a little different.
Supplies
This gift is a practical one, but it is also one that will be greatly appreciated. Teachers spend a lot of their own money on supplies for their classroom and students. A big case of pens or pencils, whiteboard markers, folders, clips—pretty much anything that can be used in the classroom will mean a lot and help the teacher free up his or her budget for their family during the holiday season.
Gift Cards
This gift is great for teachers and coaches. You can purchase these for box stores that are sure to have something the teacher or coach will like, or—if you know a store that interests them—you can purchase a card for that specific store. Restaurant gift certificates are also appreciated, allowing them to relax with their family instead of cooking dinner.
Thank You Notes
The goal of giving the teacher or coach a gift is to say thank you. But you do not need a gift to say that. A note is cheaper and will be treasured much longer—promise.
Student-Made Gifts
Similarly, gifts made by the student are also treasured. They don’t need to be complex or pretty—just something made with love.
A Group Gift
Finally, instead of getting lots of little items, why not get together with the other parents and gift something big? This could be a specific item, books for the classroom on the wish list, a weekend trip, or a gift card. It takes the stress out for everyone involved and gives the teacher or coach something truly special.
