We all know that getting outside and being active is essential to our overall health and wellbeing. We need physical activity to be at our best. But what if you’re not the sort of person who enjoys conventional sports, like basketball or football? What are you supposed to do then?
In this post, we take a look at some “sports” that you’ll love that don’t feel like conventional sports at all. What’s more, these activities will help to keep you active throughout the year – just what you need if you want to be at your best.
Dancing
If you’re looking to get fit in a different type of way, then there is no better sport than dancing. Not only does it require a lot of fitness, but it also helps with balance and flexibility at the same time. Dancing totally changes the way your physiology works and helps to give you a more rounded physique, without having to go to the gym for endless workout.
Dance also has the advantage of being fundamentally fun. It feels good to move your body in a beautiful way and is a freeing activity. When you dance, you feel at your best.
Kayaking
Another fun solo sport is kayaking. Kayakers don’t usually race against each other. Instead, they typically compete by doing time trials, seeing who can get down a course the fastest.
Kayaking is also the type of thing that you can do whenever you like. So long as you have a kayak and a lake or a river, you can run your boat to the water in the morning and keep paddling all day.
Kayaking can also be a fun way to explore a new territory. Even though you’re not hiking, you can still find some incredible views.
Pickleball
If squash, tennis and badminton aren’t quite your cup of tea, then you might want to try your hand at pickleball. This interesting paddle game first played in 1965 combines elements of multiple racket sports to achieve a unique style of gameplay.
Before you start, you’ll need the right equipment. Selkirk pickleball paddles are used by many of the sport’s professional players, though there are other brands available. Once you have a paddle, you’re ready to begin play, standing close to the net.
Fishing
If you haven’t tried your hand at fishing yet, you’re missing out. Fishing is a very cerebral sport that keeps you thinking all day long. You have to consider multiple factors, such as the area in which you fish, the time of year, the weather and the baits and lures that you use. The entire process is exceptionally complicated and intricate, which is one of the reasons people get hooked (if you’ll excuse the pun). You’re always experimenting, seeing which combinations of equipment work best.
Most people fish for fun, not to kill and eat fish. So once you catch a fish, you can release it back into the water. Some people try to catch the biggest fish that they can. Catching a larger fish is usually much more satisfying than a smaller one.
Fencing
Fencing is both a sport and a martial art. Plus, it’s been around for hundreds of years – even since people started duelling.
Fencing isn’t particularly popular as far as sports go. But once you get into it, you soon realize that it is much deeper and more interesting than you previously thought.
What makes it so great? Well, for one, you need rapid reaction times. You’re always on your toes, trying to figure out what your opponent is going to do next. You also have to have perfect timing, striking only when the risk of counter strike is low. Be aware, though, that fencing requires a huge amount of concentration. You can’t go into it half-hearted.
Archery
Archery is another fun sport that becomes incredibly addictive once you get into it. The sport requires barely any movement of the lower body. However, you’ll need to have great upper body strength and control if you use a full-size bow.
Many beginners start with a traditional recurve bow. These are like old longbows and the traditional option. You can also use compound bows. These propel the arrow with much greater force, making them more deadly.
Most archery sessions last a few hours. People will typically shoot targets. However, sometimes you might shoot objects, like fruit.
Cycling
If you don’t like regular sports, you could also try your hand at cycling. Cycling has always been popular. But recently, it has really come into its own. More people are getting into it than ever before because of the freedom it offers.
There are several different types of cycling that you could try. Road cycling is all about going fast on tarmac. These bikes have light frames and skinny wheels designed to help riders travel fast in a straight line.
You could also try touring bikes. Mostly, you’ll ride these on roads and paths. However, you can also take them on tame off road routes too, giving you flexibility.
Mountain bikes are for – you guessed it – the mountains. They allow you to go offroad and tackle the toughest terrain. They often have suspension at the front and back, and wide, grippy tires to deal with any surface, including wet rock and thick mud.
There are also trial bikes and BMX. These are for people who want to learn how to do tricks, like bunny hops.
Windsurfing
If you’re more of a sea dog than a landlubber, you might want to try your hand at windsurfing. This incredible sport feels great while also taxing your body and core strength.
Windsurfing isn’t the easiest sport to get into. But if you live by the beach or near the coast, it might be something worth investing in.
Table Tennis
Even if you’re the sort of person who loathes the idea of regular competitive sports, table tennis always somehow feels a little different. It doesn’t require you to run around as much as a regular tennis game. And it’s much easier to do trick shots to confuse your opponent.
Rollerblading
If your idea of fun is a long walk along a promenade, then rollerblading is definitely something you should try. This sport was popular in the 1990s, but since then, fewer and fewer people are interested in it. Eventually, it will come back around. But in the meantime, it is a sport that you can get into and enjoy.
Rollerbloading actually looks great. And if you get good at it, you can travel fast and do tricks. It’s like walking, but better because you’re rolling along.
Hiking
Hiking is another great option for people who want physical activity but don’t enjoy team sports. It’s free, and it helps your body regulate your weight better as well.
Hiking is also great because it allows you to explore new beautiful areas. Going for miles and miles through nature gives you an opportunity to find new countryside and just enjoy being outdoors. It’s a way to get out of the city and back into the environment we were supposed to live in.
Yoga
Technically speaking, yoga isn’t a sport – it’s a way of life. But it certainly requires a lot of physical strength, stamina and dedication. Yoga is something that many people practice everyday because it helps them to remain flexible. But it also allows you to clear your mind and become a happier and more functional human being.
If you’re not doing yoga yet, there’s always plenty of time to start. You don’t have to be an expert, and you don’t even need to go to lessons. Find an instructor online or watch free videos on your favourite social media site to see what’s involved.
Fell Running
Fell running isn’t like ordinary running. You’re not just plodding along a regular road. Instead, you’re bouncing up and down hills, taking in stunning scenery as you do so.
Granting hill running requires tremendous fitness. You need to be able to run both uphill and downhill. However, it is generally a lot more fun than regular road running and provides you with a far more attractive environment. The downside is that you’ll need to live close to mountains that have trails.
Ice Skating
Ice skating is another sport that is popular among people who generally don’t like regular sports. That’s because it doesn’t feel like sport at all when you’re doing it. Instead, it’s more like floating along, enjoying yourself.
Naturally, ice skating comes with some downsides. If you fall over, you’ll hurt yourself. But eventually, you can get really good at it. And it can be a fun thing to do in the summer when the weather gets really hot.
In summary, therefore, there are plenty of fun sports for people who don’t like regular sports. You don’t even have to be a team player to enjoy many of these activities. The vast majority you can do solo. Over time, you’ll become fitter and, eventually, doing these sports will feel natural.
