Tradition usually involves planning, creating, and repeating something. Our fun family fall tradition requires nothing but time, scissors, and a camera. This tradition started before our kids were born, continued after they were born, and is still going after they have moved out on their own.
We pick a fall day when the leaves are in their peak for colors. We jump in the car and drive……and drive…..until we find the perfect spot to pull over and enjoy the bursting of colors. There is no planning and no mapping. We find a spot to have lunch along the way and hit the road to enjoy more color. You may witness a beautiful sunset or wind up in a park searching for the perfect pine cone. When it seems like there is nothing more to look at, check the side of the road for wildflowers on their last bloom. This is where the scissors come in.
My husband and I now do this by ourselves but when the kids were little, we would get to an intersection and ask them which way to go. To keep things interesting on this ride, we would look for fun stops like pumpkin patches, hay rides, or side of the road concession stands. We never knew if we would come home with the biggest pumpkin we could find (or fit in the car) or if our trunk would be filled with hay for the scarecrow.
The key to this tradition is to go with the flow and see where the road takes you. Create memories and be adventurous!

That sounds like fun. I need to take time to just drive and see where I end up.

I think Fall means so much more when you live somewhere that has a change of season and leaves…. Florida just isn’t the same.
