Most make-up enthusiasts will tell you that cheap makeup and expensive makeup really aren’t that different…well, to a point. The true difference is from the tools you use, which means you should invest in them and take good care of them, part of which entails cleaning your makeup brushes. Not sure how? Read on to learn more.
Never Cleaned Your Brushes? Here is Why You Should.
There is a lot on your makeup brushes, some of which you’d probably rather not think about. Over time, old makeup, dirt, oil, skin particles, and bacteria will accumulate. This can cause various problems, including clogged pores and breakouts, which can lead to other problems. So cleaning your brushes is pretty important and should be done once a month.
Step by Step Instructions on How to Clean Your Brushes
The first thing you need to do is gather your supplies. There are makeup brush cleaners you can buy, but they tend to be rather expensive. Purchase these if you wish, but you can make your own makeup brush cleaner for much cheaper. Below are the items you need.
- A small bowl—just large enough for your biggest brush.
- Baby shampoo
- A lint-free cloth
Set up around your bathroom sink so everything is easy to manage. Then, rinse your brushes in the sink, keeping the water lukewarm; hot water can damage the brushes and cold water isn’t as effective. Rinse until you feel that the makeup has been washed away. Be careful when doing this as you want only to focus on the ends of the bristles; the glue that holds the brush together is near the handle, and you do not want it to lose its effectiveness.
Next, combine a small amount of the baby shampoo with the water from the sink, maintaining the temperature. Swirl the brush in this water using a gentle motion.
After a minute or so, rinse the shampoo from the brush in the sink, still with lukewarm water. If the water coming from the brush is clear, you are done. If it isn’t, repeat until it is. Then, lay your brushes on the cloth to dry.
It is that easy! And you should notice a difference in the performance of your brushes immediately.
