The blizzard of 2013 started out like any other storm. We hunkered down in the house and watched it snow for hours through the sliding doors. I particularly enjoy the snow because it gives me the chance to go out and raise a little hell on my Honda Rincon TRX680! The snow started on Friday morning and by Friday evening we had a few inches, nothing out of the ordinary. I went out to plow for the first time, throwing snow all over the place! The city was plowing the streets and everything was great for the time being. Around 5 PM I went out to plow for the second time and had another few inches but no problem for my 4-wheeler outfitted with a Moose plow! Around 8 PM is where the storm started to kick into high gear! I went out at 9 PM to plow for the 3rd time, now the storm is really rocking with the worst to come. The snow was falling so fast, by the time I finished plowing the driveway again I already had another inch or so on it! I was fighting a losing battle. I then headed over to my in-laws house to plow their driveway. When I got there the plow truck had thrown about 1.5ft of snow in front of their driveway. So I backed up the road and took a running start to jump over the snow and powered up the driveway (That’s right I’m a bad-ass)! Luckily they have a steep driveway so pushing this pile of snow wasn’t a problem once I got up to speed going downhill! After I plowed for the 3rd time I decided to call it a night since the snow was falling so hard and fast that I couldn’t see where I was plowing to.
Saturday morning came and I went to the back sliders to survey the storm. All I can say is wow! There was about 36” of fresh snow on my deck with about 12” pushed right up against my sliding door! I had some coffee and started down to the garage where my 4-wheeler was waiting.
I opened the garage door the snow fell right inside; there was a huge wall of snow that just fell into the garage. I had to shovel the snow out of the garage before I could even try to attack the driveway. So I got to work, I shoveled about 3-5ft of clearance so I could get a run at the snow with my plow. I hit the snow with everything I had moving huge amounts of snow a few inches at a time with each blast. Finally I reached the end of the driveway finding that there was a 4ft wall of snow from the plow truck. Just then I realized the road had not been touched since early the night before. Luckily just a few minutes after I reached the end of the driveway the city showed up with a pay loader, followed by a plow truck. They made one pass through the street leaving a 7ft passageway. This made it possible for me to take a run and explode through the huge wall of snow in front of my driveway. The only problem now, what to do with all this snow? I made a couple of quick passes down the street to the corner, but quickly learned that there is nowhere to put the snow. So I decided to plow a portion of my yard, making room for all of the snow from the driveway. After about 5 hours of plowing and shoveling I finally finished the driveway. My recommendations for the next blizzard that heads your way; buy a 4-wheeler with a plow and make sure you make as many passes during the storm as you can stand. I hope you enjoy the pictures!
How did you cope with this blizzard or how have you cleared your property after past blizzards?
