Ben Whishaw (Michael Banks) & Emily Mortimer (Jane Banks) Mary Poppins Returns Interview

December 14, 2018 Rachel Ferrucci

I interviewed Ben Whishaw (Michael Banks) & Emily Mortimer (Jane Banks) from Mary Poppins Returns while in LA at the Mary Poppins red carpet event. I really felt as if I was sitting with siblings. I would say Ben and Emily aren’t too far off from Michael and Jane.

How do you work joy and wonder into your life?

It was a tough on the spot question so Emily passed it over to Ben, who had no idea, and then a man after my own heart answers!

Drink… Alcohol… And cigarettes…

None of them are healthy. If I’m honest with you.

Since this is a Disney film, we’ll get back to a magical question.

Kids say the darndest things

Emily was in Barnes and Noble and her daughter found a Mary Poppins Returns book and saw her “mommy’s photo”, so she tells everyone that her mom is in a book!

Rob Marshall said last night he got his first choice of all the actors. How does it feel for him saying that, and to be in such an iconic remake of a movie.

Ben: When Rob likes you, he really, really, really, really likes you.  He doesn’t hold back. You feel his love. You feel his excitement about what you might bring to the table. Some directors don’t have that quantity. I really value that.

Both Ben and Emily couldn’t say enough how director Rob Marshall gave them so much encouragement and made them feel special, wonderful and clever and talented which in turn helped then be all those things.

Emily told us that being with Karen (the original Jane) and Dick Van Dyke was extraordinary to have connections to the original movie. It felt validating that they were excited about it, and into it, and Emily felt thrilled by the whole experience. It was good because there were a lot of nerves around taking this on.

What was the most challenging scene for you both to create?

Ben: “I think that the final scene when we’re on the balloons was quite challenging. I mean, everything was. But because that had to be the climactic moment. It’s weirdly much easier sometimes to play misery, and grief or whatever. But being open-hearted and happy can be quite hard.”

Emily adds in, “Especially when you’ve been miserable the whole movie!”

The sibling chemistry that you guys play on camera is phenomenal. Is there anything that you did special to be able to do that. Did you spend extra time together? Was it difficult to live up to the expectations of these kids that have experienced something marvelous as children. And come into as adults, and kids around you.

Ben: We were really lucky. We just immediately got on, and enjoyed each other’s company, and giggled about things, and gossiped.

Emily adds in laughing: Terribly

Emily: Waiting to go on for rehearsals, and there were weeks and weeks of rehearsals. And then acting together. And then sitting around on the set for months, months, months together.

Ben: You spend most of the time sitting in a little tent.

Emily: Planning your lunch.

Ben: By a heater

They’re exchange was just as you would expect from siblings. They finished each other sentences, joked around , and you can see how close the’ve become.

Do you have favorite scene from the movie?

Ben: “I really love the big dance number. Trip a Little Light Fantastic. I’m just knocked out by it. Because it’s tremendous.”

Emily: “I’m the same. I think it’s amazing, and you can’t catch your breath almost. Like I keep saying, it’s like intravenous entertainment. Just when you think you’ve had enough, you’ve gorged yourself. Then along comes Dick Van Dyke, and then there’s that dance. And just more, more, more, more. It’s amazing. It’s So Very cool.”

Why did no one warn us that menopause would turn our bodies into a crime scene… Dryness. Pain. Sneezing roulette. UTIs showing up uninvited. And doctors smiling politely and saying, “That’s just aging.” Cool. Love that for us.

Say Hello to Silky Peach Cream 🍑 A bioidentical estriol cream that works locally to rebuild thinning tissue, restore moisture, and bring back comfort where it actually matters. Not a Band-Aid. Not a $350 prescription. Not a lube that disappears by lunchtime.

Estriol is the gentlest form of estrogen our bodies naturally make, and Silky Peach Cream puts it back exactly where menopause took it away. Over time, tissue rebuilds, moisture returns, and suddenly intimacy doesn’t feel like sandpaper and regret.

Two pumps nightly. Then maintenance. Because it took years to get this dry… it’s okay if it takes a little time to feel normal again.

I’m done whispering about menopause. I got my life back. And my peach is happy again!

I didn’t expect this to be the hardest part of getting older.

If sex hurts. If you avoid intimacy. If you dread wiping.

It’s not “just dryness.” It’s estrogen loss. And yes, it’s fixable.

Menopause doesn’t ease in quietly. It shows up hot, uncomfortable, and disruptive. And for way too long, women are told to whisper about it or accept it as “just aging.” I’m done with that.

Silky Peach Cream helped restore moisture, rebuild thinning tissue, and bring back comfort where menopause took it away. Not a quick fix. Not a Band-Aid. Just real, gradual relief that made me feel like myself again.

Two pumps. Some patience. And a lot less suffering.

Stop whispering about menopause. You deserve relief. You deserve joy. Your peach deserves to be happy again.

In paid partnership with #NoPainPact and with the support of #VoicesforNonOpioidChoices.

When I found out I needed surgery, my 1st thought wasn’t the procedure. It was the fear of being handed opioids again with no real choice. After my last surgery, opioids were the only option I had, my insurance didn’t cover the non-opioid alternatives I specifically asked for. That showed me how quickly exposure can happen. Many people don’t realize that about 1 in 10 patients who receive opioids after surgery will struggle with long-term use. That’s nearly 4 million people per year. It’s no secret that opioids can lead to addiction, & we should be much louder about the fact that there are non opioid options that can be used during surgery to manage pain afterwards.
Medicare already recognizes this & separately reimburses for FDA-approved non-opioid pain treatments, proving these options are real & available. Yet insurance barriers often make them difficult or impossible to access. Instead of making decisions about my recovery with my doctor, insurance policy made them for me. As I prepare for my next surgery, I want access to every option that reduces my exposure. I know how easily things can escalate. I’ve seen opioid use continue far longer than intended. It can tear apart families before anyone realizes what’s happening. What starts as short-term pain management after surgery becomes something no one ever expected, simply because safer options were never offered. It’s frustrating that some major insurers still haven’t expanded coverage the way Medicare has. #UnitedHealthcare is one of the companies whose restrictions make it harder to access FDA-approved non-opioid surgical pain options. Because of their size, these decisions affect millions. Surgery shouldn’t be a gateway to opioid addiction. Medicare covers these options. UnitedHealthcare & others need to do the same so patients aren’t pushed toward opioids by outdated policies. Patients & families deserve better.
