The summer is fast approaching, and many of us will be perusing brochures for beach resorts and looking forward to spending a week or two basking in the rays and chilling out. For those who want to take it easy, this type of break sounds like a dream. But what if you’ve got other plans? If you’re an all-action hero keen to enjoy some thrills and spills on your next vacation, you may be looking for inspiration for destinations that offer more active adventures. Here are some ideas to get you thinking.
New Zealand
If you thrive on adrenaline, there are few places on Earth that will enchant you like New Zealand. If you’ve seen the Lord of the Rings films, some of the dramatic scenery will be familiar, but nothing can prepare you for the sight of domineering peaks, crystal-clear lakes and tranquil fjords in real life. This is truly one of the world’s beauty spots, and the best news is that there’s scope to go crazy and try out all kinds of different activities. In New Zealand, you can kayak, visit caves full of glow worms, brave the white water rapids and throw yourself off a bridge attached to a bungee rope. You can also skydive, hike and cycle to your heart’s content, and ski and snowboard in the winter months. If you’re based on North Island, you’ll find plenty going on in the lively hub of Lake Taupo while adventure seekers and intrepid backpackers tend to gather in Queenstown on South Island.

Alaska
Famed for its vast stretches of untouched wilderness, Alaska is undoubtedly a jewel in America’s crown. You’ll be captivated by the stunning scenery, and you can really test your mettle here if you’re up for a challenge. You’ll be spoiled for choice if you’re a keen hiker, as there are hundreds of routes to choose from. One popular choice is the Angel Rocks Trail near Fairbanks. While you’re in town, don’t miss the opportunity to try the official state sport, dog mushing or the chance to land the catch of the day. If you’re a fan of fishing, this is the place to be. Take a look at Ketchikan fishing charters and cast your line in search of salmon and halibut. It’s a shame to leave Alaska without paying Denali National Park a visit. Here, you can hike and cycle, and if you take the bus tour, you have a good chance of spotting all kinds of species, including caribou, moose, and grizzly bears.

If you’re thinking of booking a holiday with a difference, why not visit one of these exhilarating destinations?
