Are you on a health drive before the holidays? Are you eager to be more active and get the kids involved? If so, action-packed days out are a great idea. Here are some suggestions to try this fall.
On your bike
Bike rides are a fantastic way to burn some calories and enjoy the great outdoors. You can go on a family bike ride with children of all ages, and there are loads of different routes to choose from. You can hook the bikes up to the back of the car and make a day of it. Or you could simply stay local. If you have older kids and they thrive on adrenaline, head out into the hills and hire mountain bikes for the day.

Hiking and rambling
You often associate rambling with older people, but walking around in spectacular scenery appeals to most ages. If you have young children, you can make your own nature trail. If you have older kids, you can combine hiking with all kinds of other activities. Try kayaking, canoeing or abseiling.

A day at the beach
If you’re lucky enough to live in an area blessed with fall sunshine, take every opportunity to hit the beach before winter arrives. Take a cricket or boules set with you. Or invest in a volleyball set. Invite friends and family and get a tournament going. If you enjoy life in the water, take some snorkels or book a surfing lesson. You could also try wind sailing or waterskiing.

Ice skating
Winter is coming, and it’s almost time to embrace the cold. This time of year is perfect for trying out activities like ice skating. It doesn’t matter how talented you are. You can still have a great time even if you can barely make a couple of strides without falling. There are lots of indoor rinks around. But look out for pop-up outdoor rinks in the run-up to Christmas. Get your hats, scarves and warm coats out, and you’re guaranteed to enjoy a great family day out. If you have very small children, look out for aids that will help to steady them.

Climbing
If it’s wet and windy outside, you may not want to brave the elements. Climbing is a great indoor activity, which is suitable for all the family. You can hire harnesses and ropes when you get there. You’ll often find that children enjoy the thrill of trying to make it to the top, and they improve rapidly. You can follow different tracks and routes, and there are options to suit all abilities.

It may be getting cooler, but this doesn’t mean we have to retreat to the sofa and hibernate until spring. There are plenty of active pursuits you can try this fall. You get the opportunity to try new things, see the sights, and spend quality time together. Getting out and about is also much better for your health than spending all your time huddled up indoors. Even if some of these suggestions don’t float your boat, you’re bound to find activities you love.
