A Diamond Is Forever

Before 1947 diamonds were not on every girl’s mind, in fact an engagement ring wasn’t heard of. In 1947 Frances Gerety, a copywriter at the advertising agency N.W. Ayer who was hired by De Beers, came up with the slogan “A Diamond Is Forever”. These gems were plentiful so De Beers would only release a small amount to keep the diamonds selling. In less than a year, “A Diamond is Forever” became the official slogan of De Beers.

The 50’s proved to be glitz and glamour and De Beers showered Hollywood stars with diamonds to dazzle their fans. Once Hollywood icon and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe sang “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the appeal for diamonds  for women was secured. By the end of the 50’s, De Beers marketing campaign had successfully penetrated the public to consider a diamond engagement ring a tradition in becoming engaged.
