I ask that you read this post in its entirety. I also ask that when you are done you share it. I’m NOT looking for hits on my site or any type of glory for posting. It is a campaign that I asked to be a part of because I feel this is so important and we need to talk about this and spread awareness. Go purple this October for domestic violence awareness month.

It is time we take action against domestic violence during October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

It is so easy to sit on the sidelines and accuse someone of being weak for staying in a relationship where there is domestic violence. The truth is, the victim is usually beat down through verbal and/or physical violence. We need to generate awareness of what domestic violence is, explain how to detect the signs of abuse and offer resources to help someone in need. I had a friend go through this and when she had the strength and will to leave, I was there for her. She moved in with her two children until she was able to get on her feet. I only wish I was educated more myself so I could have helped her sooner. Knowing the signs, the how’s and why’s will help us be the support people need. I’m thankful today she is in a healthy relationship and the children are wonderful!

1 in 3 women, 1 in 4 men and more than 3 million children in the United States impacted by domestic violence. On a typical day, more than 20,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. THIS NEEDS to change!

Warning Signs With Dating

Being able to tell the difference between healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships can be more difficult than you would think. No two relationships are the same, so what’s unhealthy in one relationships may be abusive in the next. Although there are many signs to pay attention to in a relationship, look for these common warning signs of dating abuse:

  • Checking cell phones, emails or social networks without permission
  • Extreme jealousy or insecurity
  • Constant belittling or put-downs
  • Explosive temper
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Making false accusations
  • Erratic mood swings
  • Physically inflicting pain or hurt in any way
  • Possessiveness
  • Telling someone what to do
  • Repeatedly pressuring someone to have sex
