Addiction Recovery Through Music at Recovery Unplugged

May 15, 2015 Rachel Ferrucci Leave a Comment

Addiction– the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

There’s a stigma on people with addiction, many believe addiction is a choice or someone who decides to drink or take drugs and does not have will power. The truth is people don’t choose to be addicted, they have fallen into a trap that it not easy to get out of. Knowing many recovering addicts, I was more than happy to share when Recovery Unplugged started this #RecoveryMusic campaign. People of all ages can be addicts. From young kids to adults, addiction can find them and grip on hoping to take over their life. Addiction is a disease that most non-addicts don’t understand. Addicts do choose to get help but finding the right drug treatment center to put them on the road to a non dependent life can be a challenge.

Open Your Eyes

Let’s talk about our kids. Most parents will say they know their kids inside and out. They will also say they know what their kids are doing. Can you honestly say that your parents knew everything you did as a kid, you never got away with anything? Maybe you think it’s because you were smarter as a sly kid. Open your eyes because kids know how to get away with stuff especially if they’re sneaking around dabbling in drinking or drugs. As a parent you need to be aware of your child’s behavior. Don’t be naive and think it can’t happen to you or your child because if your eyes are shut, you’ll miss it and it can spiral out of control. Remember it only takes ONCE and they can be in that trap.

She Was A Great Mom

When we’re prescribed medication it doesn’t occur to us that the very meds we’re taking to heal us can actually hurt us in long term. Know your medication especially if it’s a narcotic. A friend of ours who was married with two beautiful kids was in a car accident. She was prescribed pain meds and unbeknownst to us, she became addicted. This was a straight laced grown woman who never tried any type of drug, never smoked, and had an occasional drink. She now was stealing from her own family, hitting the streets, going to jail, and living a life of drugs and crime. Her family tried to help but nothing helped. Today our old friend is somewhere on the street and we don’t know if we will ever see her again.

Music As Therapy

Music can set your mood. You may hear a song that takes you to a specific memory (happy or sad). There are songs that will pop you out of your chair and have you dancing with your hands in the air. There’s also that song that will have tears streaming down your face no matter how many times you hear it. Music goes deep into our soul, the artists words tells our story. Although we’re all individual, we are human and have feelings and emotion. Recovery Unplugged Treatment Center understands the power of music and uses it to their advantage.

Music Makes the Difference

Our mission is to provide hope and healing for individuals affected by addiction using the power of music.

Many music geniuses such as Steven Tyler from Aerosmith will stop by and share their voice to give back and help those in recovery. The following video “Dream On” will give a glimpse of how music can make an impact in recovery.

The challenge with typical treatment programs, besides most of it being based on talk-therapy, is that eventually you have to leave. What can be done in 30 days can be easily undone in 30 minutes. Although addicts have much in common, there are individual needs that are ignored in most treatment centers. At Recovery Unplugged™ Treatment Center, we get to know each client as an individual, allowing us to better understand his or her needs for a full recovery. Just as everyone is different, so are our clients’ needs for rehabilitation and long-term sobriety. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to give our clients the best chance at returning to society as sober, motivated individuals. Our treatment philosophy centers on providing clients with a full continuum of care and rehabilitation with guidance and support every step of the way. Clients engage in day or night treatment with community housing, intensive outpatient programming, aftercare ,and sober living.

Musical Medicine

Recovery Unplugged is a drug rehab center in Florida that uses musical medicine. Besides regular treatment they use music to break through the walls created to tackle the addiction. The clients are included in music groups and give live performances. This is a great way to explore the creative side of themselves. No prior musical experience is needed and clients are encouraged to  write lyrics and even record their songs in Recovery Unplugged’s studio. Some of the greatest songs written were wrote when the artist was in a dark spot or their happiest spot. Learning how to put those feelings out there on paper or through music is an alternative to trying to make them go away through drugs or alcohol.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
