Take Action Against Alzheimer’s

November 25, 2014 Rachel Ferrucci Leave a Comment

Alzheimer's A New Era Of ResearchWatching a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be very painful for family members. It’s affects many families and we need to Take Action Against Alzheimer’s Today! I watched my grandmother go from an active outgoing classy woman to someone who didn’t know who I was. Our family always tried to find the positive in everything and even found comedy in some of things my grandmother did but when it came down to the facts, it was a horrible time and my heart breaks for what my grandmother went through.

Alzheimer's By Numbers

Some memories we try to find humor: My grandmother once told everyone at my party that I burned all the strawberries. (They were chocolate covered).  We would need to check her pocketbook before leaving anywhere because she thought she was shopping and would fill her purse with household objects. We would joke at the time and ask who checked gram’s bag before leaving but really this is the same lady who took pride in everything she did and if she knew what she was doing she would be mortified. Maybe the humor helped us to cope with this awful disease.

We have reached a pivotal point in the path toward Alzheimer’s prevention…and now is the time to act.

Some facts about Alzheimer’s

  • One in nine Americans age 65 and older lives with Alzheimer’s disease. If current trends continue, 16 million Americans will suffer from the disease by 2050.
  • At the same time, research has progressed to the point that we can detect changes in the brain associated with the disease one or two decades BEFORE the first signs of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer's The cost Of Care

As a result, research into Alzheimer’s prevention is now at a crucial turning point:

  • With Alzheimer’s research a government priority, some of the nation’s most respected research organizations have formed collaborative relationships to accelerate their work. The Registry is an example of this kind of collaboration, bringing together top organizations to support and advance Alzheimer’s prevention research.
  • After years of research, we understand better the timeline, course and impact of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • A surge of prevention studies is just around the corner.
  • Alzheimer’s develops in the brain long before symptoms ever surface, which means there is no time to waste – for any of us. With a goal of enrolling 250,000 people, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Registry is a platform for those ready to take part in prevention research and prove that there is power in numbers.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
