DIY- New Doors and Paint Brighten a Room

March 14, 2011 Rachel Ferrucci 4 Comments

Welcome to the first week of Tuesday Tools, Tips and Tricks.

Projects around the house can be very expensive, especially if you have to hire someone. It’s worth it to learn how to use your basic tools and tackle the projects on your own.

Brighten up any room for under $300 with a simple project.

What you’ll need: Paint and New Closet Doors

Painting isn’t as hard as some think when you follow a few simple steps. Always prepare your surface by repairing, sanding, and cleaning it. personally I don’t like using tape, I never have good luck with it. Tape can pull off the paint of the protected surface or pull off what you just painted. I like to use a good quality angled brush. Don’t try to carry around the can, pour some in a plastic cup or disposable bowl, and always have damp paper towels/cloth on hand to wipe away any mistakes. If you’re really afraid to do this free-hand, check into the edging tools they have.
When starting to paint, don’t put too much paint on the brush. This will only make a mess with drips. Start slow and move your brush along the edge with a steady hand. Once all the edging is done then use your rollers to paint the rest of the walls. Allow to dry till next day. Total time= 1.5 hours

Next day – Time to install the closet doors. Installing closet doors shouldn’t take more than an hour and it’s relatively easy to do. We decided on bi-fold doors and they usually come with everything needed for installation.

Install the upper track section with a screwdriver according to the manufacturer’s directions

Position the bottom track section into place on the floor beneath the upper track.

Place the door in the lower pivoting rod first by drop the lower pin into the lower bracket slot.  place the upper pivot pin in the hole in the bracket and the guide in the track. Verify there is a 1/4″ clearance between the pivot door and the jamb. Four panel assemblies should be snug at the middle. Repeat on the opposite side with the other door.

I won’t go through the entire process because the directions are very detailed and come with pictures!!
Here are my before and after

I love the new door. You know I’m not on board with the tape either. Of course using an angled brush never occurred to me either. DUH! So, now after reading this voila I have a new tip. 😀

I love the doors! We have crazy closet doors that I loathe-they go floor to ceiling though so it’s either pay $$$$ to replace them or box them in.

    I love the paint too!

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
