Oscar (Academy Awards) Trivia and Fun Facts

March 1, 2014 Rachel Ferrucci 1 Comment

The Oscars are that once a year award show that is a must-see. Everyone who is someone is there. Oscars and Hollywood are practically the same word. I’ve been grabbing snacks and sitting in front of the tube with family for as long as I can remember. Oscar parties have been popping up since social media came on the scene and people go to the hilt to make their party as hot as the ones going on in Cali. This year I’ll be watching with my snacks and my laptop. I now get to chat with my friends all over the country during the show. This makes it so much more fun because I get to share my opinions about the fashion, beauty, nominees, and of the course the winners.

To get you in the mood to join us, here are some fun facts and trivia about the Oscars:

  • The 1st Academy Awards held in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt was on May 16th, 1929
  • The Oscars started before the Twinkie was invented & before the Star Spangled Banner officially becomes the national anthem
  • Bob Hope holds the record for the most Academy Awards-hosting gigs, reportedly hosting the show 19 times
  • 50 golden statues were created to give away this year
  • 40.3 million will be watching the Oscars
  • 2900 Oscars have been awarded since the first Academy Awards
  • Oscar weighs 8.5 pounds
  • The youngest Oscar winner was Tatum O’Neal, only ten when she won Best Supporting Actress for Paper Moon in 1973
  • The only sequel to have won Best Picture is The Godfather: Part II
  • The last black and white film to win Best Picture was Schindler’s List (1993)
  • Liza Minnelli, meanwhile, is the only Oscar winner whose parents (Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli) also both won Academy Awards.
  • John Lasseter dresses his Academy Awards in Barbie clothes
  • The sealed envelope dates back to 1941. In 1940 the LA Times broke the Academy’s embargo and published the names of all the winners before the ceremony
  • Most Thank You’s in one speech was by Gwyneth Paltrow’s – total 23

Will you be watching the Oscars?

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
