Made The Change To Cloth Diapers – Our Journal Week One

January 24, 2014 Rachel Ferrucci 10 Comments

Well tomorrow is the big day!!! We are making the change to cloth diapers! Wish me luck! I hope this goes well. I have a collection of mostly pocket diapers and 2 All-in-One diapers. I am excited to find out what works best for us!

I had so many questions and still do so I decided to create a journal of our journey with cloth diapers. We started with Making The Change To Cloth Diapers – Our Journal

01/13/2014

Day one- Was a a bit of a fail…. Lesson learned. Although I researched All in One verses Pocket and brands and cost. I neglected to read up on preparing the diapers. We leaked through diapers the entire day. Quite frustrating really!

Sooooo, that night I sat down and researched leaking. I found out you needed to prep the diapers:

  • Wash them is hot water
  • Dry them
  • Repeat 3 times
  • Use the correct detergent, Zero residue is best.

You can spend money on the really expensive cloth diapering detergents or I used Seventh Generation Baby detergent. DO NOT use Dreft. (at least that is what I read) Dreft will leave a residue on the diapers and that will cause them to leak.

Today is officially Day Two in the transition to cloth diapers. Better on leaks but 2 poopy explosions that the diapers held up on! (Hooray!) Only one pee through. Getting better! Ok, I spoke to soon, had a few more leaks and the night did not go well at all.

So until I figure out the daytime issues we are going to use disposables at night.

So thankfully we were home most of the day today, not too bad. I ended up keeping little miss in a shirt, cloth diaper and leggings (she looked incredibly cute) Still having leaking issues. I spoke to a Mom friend and she recommended trying this…..

You do a hot wash of the diapers with no detergent…full cycle. Then, a new cycle with 1tbsp. of Blue Dawn (has to be the blue – no other additives). Do a full cycle, and then as many rinse cycles as it takes for you to not see any more soap bubbles. (3-4 rinses worked for us). This will take out any oils or residues from your diapers. You also have to use a cloth-diaper safe rash cream, or they will leak.

I will be trying this Sunday, since I have to work all weekend. Overall a better day today, but I am still not 100% convinced, I don’t understand why I can’t get it right, it seems so easy for most other Mom’s!

We spent most of the day at home, frequent changes helped avoid leaks, hopefully once I try the treatment it will help! I’ll keep you posted! Here is too a better week next week!

I had to work today, Daddy isn’t completely on board with cloth diapers. So she spent most of the day in disposables. I did do the treatment with Dawn detergent so my fingers are crossed that solved some of my leaking issues!!!! Fingers crossed!

Do you use cloth diapers? What advice can you give a lost Mom? I love hearing the advice, so please share!

I just love Fluffy Butts though!!!!

Strange that you are having a lot of leaks! Did you wash the inserts a few times before using them? It helps absorption. At night I use 2 g-diaper inserts and this is usually good for the whole night. I also rinse without detergent in cold and then wash in hot. Works great. I just use the babyganics detergent. You do need to change more often with cloth usually every 2 hours or so, or whenever wet. My partner and mom were skeptical at first but now they are the ones trying to convince others to cloth diaper. I use the flip diapers from bum genius (the snap ones) and after nearly 1 year they are still holding up well!

Thank you so much for the tips! I did wash them quite a few times. I will try to rinse in cold water first though and see if that helps. I will look for the g-diaper inserts. Nights have been tough, she is a big wetter at night. 🙂

I used disposable with my first 2 also. I wish I had tried this sooner.

That is a lot of washing of diapers. I tried cloth but could not stand the leaking

I’m learning more and more about fit, that is helping with the leaks. It is definitely a learning process.

I remember when I was little this was the craze – then came the quick and trashy kind. Now this is getting a comeback, eh? Great post Rachel!

It’s funny how everything circles back around! I was a sworn disposable mom until I needed to do something for my daughters skin. Thanks for reading and commenting 🙂

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
