2014 New Years Resolution

January 6, 2014 Carissa Beam 19 Comments

As we wave goodbye to 2013, many of us can’t wait to move on to the new year and “restart” ..leaving as much as we can behind. Instead of this traditional approach, I’m taking every little bit of 2013 with me. This was one of the most difficult years, partly because my life changed dramatically and partly because I barely have any recollection of the year’s events.

Champagne-Glasses

I was in an accident in March- a freak accident- where my 2 ½ yr old son knocked me out .. literally.. and gave me a severe concussion. Doctors say he hit me in “just the right spot” which unraveled my world (and life) as I knew it. I haven’t driven a car since March. I had a walker & a cane and went through physical therapy to be able to balance myself and walk again. My daily routine consists of my brain battling sensory overload, optical migraine headaches which make me go blind, and not being able to remember 80% of the things I’ve done, seen, and experienced since the accident. In a matter of seconds I went from a career driven, working mom and wife to a woman that couldn’t walk or do anything without help from my husband.

Over the past 9 months I’ve been jotting things down in a journal to jog my memory and try to gain some recollection and perspective of what my life has been like. I rely solely on this journal, my husband and my family to fill in the memory gaps of the past 9 months. So while the world is working to forget the days of 2013, I’m hanging on to every last thread.. from my son’s surgery to finding out we were having another boy and every panic attack in between. There are some memories that are just too precious to let slip away!

While there is still an extremely long road to recovery for me, I’m fortunate enough to have a wonderful support system of family and friends to help me along the way. I’ve learned a lot about my marriage, my family, the people in my support system, and the things that are TRULY important to me. So as many of you are anxious to waive goodbye to the things you can’t wait to forget from 2013, take a step back and see how much of yourself you can take with you. They may seem like insignificant memories and experiences, but you have them, so cherish them and use what you can to make 2014 your best year ever!

What was one of your most treasured memories of 2013?

Crissy this was a beautiful post and I have become a firm believer that every moment in life is a precious and life changing one. The significance of what we go through, good or bad, is what molds us into the people we are. And for me, though 2013 was not an easy one, it was truly one I want to hold onto. I didnt make any resolutions this year…. I am making daily affirmations.
You are awesome and so is your family. I have been fortunate to be a part of knowing them and loving them… all the way from NYC. Lol xoxo

I was one of those mentally kicking 2013 out the door because it could have been better. But after reading your moving story, I will spend some time reflecting on your question of what is my most treasured memories of the year. I’m sure they will be family centric. I wish you wellness and happiness in 2013.

I’m so sorry to hear you are going through this. I will keep you in my prayers. I have several treasured memories of the kids accomplishing some of their goals and a few that I have accomplished as well.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
