From Bourbon to Bubbles, Your Holiday Guide to Spirits and Festive Cocktails

October 14, 2026 Rachel Ferrucci

The holidays have a funny way of sneaking up on us. One minute we’re enjoying the last of the warm weather, and the next we’re pulling out the good glasses, planning holiday menus, and wondering whether we have enough bourbon to survive another spirited family gathering. Welcome to another edition of Sips and Spirits, where we discover the salt of life, one delicious pour at a time.

I’ve always believed that entertaining should feel more like a celebration and less like a second job. Whether you’re hosting an elegant cocktail party, gathering the family around the fireplace, or enjoying a quiet evening with someone special, having a few wonderful bottles on hand makes everything a little easier. And no, you don’t need a fully stocked bar that rivals your favorite restaurant. A thoughtful selection of spirits, a handful of fresh ingredients, and a little creativity can go a long way.

This year’s holiday guide is all about finding something for everyone. We’re traveling from Italy to Texas, Louisiana to Hawaii, and stopping for some exceptional American whiskey along the way. There are sophisticated cocktails, cozy after-dinner sippers, beautiful bottles worthy of gifting, and even a zero-proof option for those who prefer their celebrations without alcohol. So polish those glasses, put on your favorite holiday playlist, and let’s get into the good stuff.

Holiday Spirits That Deserve a Place on Your Bar Cart

Disaronno Originale

Some bottles have a way of making an ordinary evening feel like a little Italian getaway, and Disaronno Originale is one of them. With its unmistakable square bottle and wonderfully smooth, almond-like flavor, this iconic Italian liqueur has earned its place on bar carts around the world. The combination of marzipan, vanilla, subtle dried fruit, and warming sweetness makes it particularly appealing during the holidays.

What I love about Disaronno is that it doesn’t require much effort to enjoy. Pour it over ice for a lovely after-dinner drink, mix it into a classic Disaronno Sour, or create a festive Disaronno Spritz when friends arrive. It also makes a thoughtful hostess gift, especially when paired with a couple of pretty cocktail glasses. After all, showing up with a beautiful bottle is always better than arriving empty-handed.

Tia Maria Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur

Coffee lovers, this one’s for us. Tia Maria Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur combines the richness of premium 100% Arabica coffee beans with a smooth, balanced flavor created through a specialized roasting and cold brew extraction process. The result is a coffee liqueur that feels sophisticated without being overly complicated, exactly what I want when I’m entertaining.

And if there’s one cocktail that has practically become a holiday party essential, it’s the Espresso Martini. Tia Maria brings a wonderful coffee depth to the drink, while a little bourbon and maple syrup add a seasonal twist. It’s the kind of cocktail I’d serve after dinner instead of a second cup of coffee, although I certainly wouldn’t turn down dessert alongside it.

Tia Thx Espresso Martini

Ingredients

  • 25 ml Tia Maria Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur

  • 25 ml espresso coffee

  • 25 ml bourbon

  • 10 ml maple syrup

  • Crushed caramel, for garnish

  • 3 coffee beans, for garnish

Directions

Add the Tia Maria, espresso, bourbon, and maple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled, then strain into a chilled martini or coupe glass. Garnish with crushed caramel and three coffee beans.

Chicken Cock Whiskey

With a name like Chicken Cock, you know there’s a story behind the bottle. This historic American whiskey brand brings plenty of personality to the bar, and its Wheated Bourbon offers a particularly inviting introduction. Made with a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley, aged at least five years, and bottled at 94 proof, it delivers a softer, rounder experience than the brand’s traditional rye-forward expressions.

This is the kind of bourbon I’d bring out when the evening slows down and everyone settles into their favorite chair. It’s also an excellent gift for the whiskey enthusiast who appreciates a bottle with character. For cocktail lovers, the brand’s Circa 1856 Old Fashioned is a beautiful holiday choice, especially with its dramatic brûléed orange garnish. Just keep in mind that the recipe calls for Chicken Cock Rye rather than the Wheated Bourbon featured here.

Circa 1856 Old Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Chicken Cock Rye

  • ¼ oz. demerara syrup

  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters

  • 2 dashes orange bitters

  • 1 orange half-moon slice

  • Raw sugar, for garnish

Directions

Combine the rye, demerara syrup, and both bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until well chilled, then strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Sprinkle raw sugar over the orange slice and carefully caramelize with a culinary torch until brûléed. Garnish the cocktail with the orange.

Pallini Limoncello

There’s something about limoncello that instantly transports me to Italy, preferably somewhere along the Amalfi Coast with a gorgeous view and absolutely nowhere I need to be. Pallini Limoncello has been crafted by the Pallini family, whose Italian liqueur-making history dates back to 1875. Made with prized Sfusato lemons from the Amalfi Coast, it captures that bright, fragrant citrus flavor that makes limoncello so irresistible.

While many people associate limoncello with summer, I think it’s equally wonderful during the holidays. Its fresh citrus character is a welcome contrast to rich holiday meals, and it’s lovely served chilled after dinner. For something a little more festive, the Limone & Basilico combines limoncello, vermouth, amaro, and Prosecco for a sophisticated Italian-inspired cocktail.

Limone & Basilico

Recipe by Star Chefs competition winner Richard BeltzerIngredients

  • 1½ oz. Pallini Limoncello

  • 1 oz. basil-infused dry vermouth

  • ½ oz. Amaro Montenegro

  • ¼ oz. lemon juice

  • 1½ oz. Prosecco

Directions

Combine the limoncello, basil-infused dry vermouth, Amaro Montenegro, and lemon juice in a mixing glass with ice. Stir gently until chilled, then strain into a chilled wine glass or coupe. Top with Prosecco and serve immediately.

Devil’s Grin Texas Gin

If you’re looking for a gin with a little attitude, Devil’s Grin Texas Gin certainly has the name for it. This award-winning craft gin is made with 14 botanicals, bringing together classic juniper, lively citrus, and subtle spice. It’s smooth enough for traditional gin lovers while offering enough personality to make a simple cocktail feel special.

I especially appreciate spirits that don’t require an entire shopping trip’s worth of ingredients to make something delicious. A classic Gimlet is proof that sometimes simple really is best. With just gin, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup, it’s crisp, refreshing, and a lovely option to serve before a holiday dinner. Add a pretty lime wheel and suddenly you’ve got a cocktail that looks like you put in far more effort than you actually did.

Gimlet

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz. Devil’s Grin Texas Gin

  • ¾ oz. fresh lime juice

  • ¾ oz. simple syrup

  • 1 lime wheel, for garnish

Directions

Add the gin, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until thoroughly chilled, then strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh cubed ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.

False River Spiced Rum

Not every holiday cocktail needs to taste like cinnamon cookies or peppermint. Sometimes I want a little sunshine in my glass, even when the temperature outside suggests otherwise. False River Spiced Rum comes from Louisiana, where it’s distilled from sugarcane grown along the banks of False River in Pointe Coupée. This 88-proof, small-batch rum is blended with natural botanicals and offers inviting hints of orange and vanilla.

It’s delicious enjoyed slowly over ice, but I particularly love the idea of bringing a tropical-inspired cocktail into holiday entertaining. The False River Cain Killer combines pineapple, orange, and coconut for a creamy, fruity drink that feels like a vacation. Serve it at a holiday gathering and you might just convince everyone to start planning a warm-weather getaway.

False River Cain Killer

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. False River Spiced Rum

  • 4 oz. pineapple juice

  • 1 oz. fresh orange juice

  • 1 oz. cream of coconut

  • 1 orange slice, for garnish

  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish

Directions

Add the rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 15 to 30 seconds until well chilled. Pour into a glass filled with fresh ice. Finish with freshly grated nutmeg and garnish with an orange slice.

Reserva Especial

There are some spirits that deserve to be enjoyed slowly, and Don Q Reserva Especial is certainly one of them. This premium rum is a blend of rums aged seven to 10 years in carefully selected American white oak ex-bourbon barrels. That aging process creates a wonderfully layered character, with the kind of smoothness and complexity that makes you appreciate what’s in your glass.

I think a beautiful aged rum is an underrated addition to a holiday bar. While everyone else is reaching for bourbon or cognac, offering a quality sipping rum feels like an unexpected little luxury. Serve Reserva Especial neat or over a large ice cube and let its character shine. It also makes a lovely gift for someone who enjoys exploring premium spirits beyond the usual favorites.

Jeptha Creed Red, White & Blue Bourbon

I have a soft spot for businesses with a meaningful family story, and Jeptha Creed Distillery certainly delivers. Founded by a mother-daughter team, the distillery celebrates heritage, innovation, and craftsmanship. Its limited-release Red, White & Blue Bourbon makes a particularly thoughtful holiday gift for someone who appreciates both a quality bourbon and the people behind it.

This is one of those bottles I’d be happy to wrap with a beautiful ribbon and place beneath the tree. Of course, it’s equally tempting to open it and create something special for guests. The Heart of Gold cocktail offers a delicious combination of bourbon, honey, lemon, and Lillet Rouge, with a fresh strawberry adding a pretty finishing touch. The supplied recipe specifies Jeptha Creed Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon, so that’s the expression to use when following it exactly.

Heart of Gold

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Jeptha Creed Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon

  • 1 oz. honey simple syrup

  • ¾ oz. lemon juice

  • ¼ oz. Lillet Rouge

  • 1 strawberry, for garnish

  • 1 lemon wheel, for garnish

Directions

Combine the bourbon, honey simple syrup, lemon juice, and Lillet Rouge in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake thoroughly until chilled, then strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with the strawberry and lemon wheel.

PaPaw’s Ridge Kentucky Straight Bourbon

If the holidays had a signature aroma, I suspect it would involve baked apples, caramel, vanilla, and something delicious coming out of the oven. That’s exactly why PaPaw’s Ridge Kentucky Straight Bourbon feels so appropriate for the season. Aged for at least four years and bottled at 86 proof, this bourbon features a mash bill of yellow corn, rye, and barley.

The tasting notes alone sound like a holiday dessert menu. Think dark chocolate bourbon balls, butterscotch, baked apple crumble, and a little campfire smoke on the nose. On the palate, caramel apple and fig lead into a smooth finish with vanilla warmth. I’d serve this one neat or over ice after dinner, preferably with a plate of holiday cookies nearby. It’s an approachable bottle that feels equally at home at a festive gathering or a quiet evening by the fire.

Kōloa Kaua‘i Cacao Rum

Chocolate lovers, we have found our holiday spirit. Kōloa Kaua‘i Cacao Rum is practically dessert in a glass, and I mean that in the very best way. Distilled on Kaua‘i from pure cane sugar and blended with filtered mountain water, this chocolate-flavored rum delivers delicate cocoa aromas, mocha undertones, subtle baking spices, and a wonderfully smooth texture.

This is the bottle I’d bring out when everyone claims they’re too full for dessert but somehow still has room for a little something sweet. Serve it neat, over ice, or experiment with adding a splash to a coffee-based cocktail. It also makes a wonderful gift for the chocolate enthusiast in your life. Honestly, pair it with a box of beautiful truffles and you might just become everyone’s favorite holiday guest.

Middle West Dark Pumpernickel Straight Rye

Every now and then, I come across a spirit that makes me stop and say, “Well, that’s interesting.” Middle West Dark Pumpernickel Straight Rye is definitely one of those discoveries. Described as America’s first dark pumpernickel rye whiskey, it’s crafted using dark pumpernickel rye, non-GMO open-pollinated yellow corn, soft red winter wheat, and two-row barley.

This is a bottle for someone who appreciates the craftsmanship and creativity behind American whiskey. Its distinctive grain combination makes it a conversation starter, especially when entertaining guests who enjoy trying something beyond their usual pour. For a cocktail that feels right at home during the holidays, the Middle West Manhattan combines rye whiskey, stone fruit vodka, sweet vermouth, and bitters. A few Luxardo cherries finish it beautifully.

Middle West Manhattan

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Middle West Spirits Straight Rye Whiskey

  • ½ oz. OYO Stone Fruit Vodka

  • ½ oz. sweet vermouth

  • 5 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 1 to 3 Luxardo maraschino cherries, for garnish

Directions

Combine the rye whiskey, stone fruit vodka, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters in a lowball glass. Add ice and stir until chilled. Garnish with one to three Luxardo maraschino cherries.

Something Special for the Zero-Proof Crowd

Pallini Limonzero

A wonderful holiday gathering should have something delicious for everyone, including guests who prefer to skip the alcohol. That’s why I’m always happy to find a sophisticated non-alcoholic option that feels every bit as celebratory as a traditional cocktail. Pallini Limonzero brings the bright, zesty character of Italian lemons into a refreshing zero-proof aperitivo.

What makes Limonzero particularly appealing is its versatility. It’s perfect for creating a beautiful alcohol-free spritz, and its lively citrus character makes it an excellent alternative to overly sweet soft drinks. Serve it in a pretty glass with ice, sparkling water, and a lemon garnish for an easy, elegant drink. Because enjoying the holiday spirit should never depend on whether there’s actual alcohol in your glass.

Raise a Glass to the Season

One of my favorite things about the holidays is that the best moments rarely have anything to do with how perfectly everything is planned. They’re the unexpected conversations in the kitchen, the friends who stay longer than expected, the laughter that gets a little louder as the evening goes on, and the simple pleasure of sharing something wonderful with people you love. Whether you’re pouring a beautiful bourbon, mixing a festive cocktail, or offering a refreshing zero-proof spritz, the real luxury is having the time to enjoy it.

So this season, don’t worry about creating the perfect holiday party. Stock your bar with a few favorites, try a new cocktail recipe, bring out those glasses you’ve been saving for a special occasion, and make the most of the people gathered around you. Life is too short for boring drinks and saving the good stuff for someday. Here’s to wonderful friends, delicious discoveries, and a holiday season filled with plenty of reasons to raise a glass.
