Paris Weekend Guide Where to Stay What to See and How to Do It Right

May 29, 2026 Rachel Ferrucci

Paris is one of those cities that somehow manages to feel grand, romantic, glamorous, and lived-in all at once. A weekend there can be magical if you plan it properly. If you just wing it, you may spend half your trip in lines, uncomfortable shoes, and wondering why everyone else looks so chic while you are sweating into your scarf.

We recently spent a weekend in Paris and found the perfect balance of iconic sights, romantic moments, stylish wandering, and smart shortcuts. If you want a trip filled with elegance, great food, memorable photos, and enough walking to justify dessert, here is exactly how to do it.

Stay in District 1 at Hôtel Des Ducs D’Anjou Paris

One of the smartest decisions you can make in Paris is choosing the right neighborhood. We stayed at Hôtel Des Ducs D’Anjou Paris, tucked into the heart of District 1, also known as the 1st arrondissement. This area is prime Paris. You are close to some of the city’s most famous attractions, incredible shopping, beautiful streets, and enough cafés to keep your espresso levels dangerously high.

District 1 is ideal for a weekend because you are centrally located. That means less time commuting and more time enjoying Paris. You can walk to the Louvre, stroll to the Seine, and easily hop in a taxi to other neighborhoods.

Another major perk is the nearby shopping at Forum des Halles, the massive modern (underground) mall in the center of Paris. If you forgot something, need a fashion fix, or simply enjoy people watching while pretending to need another handbag, this is the place to go.

The hotel itself gives you that classic Paris feeling while putting you right in the middle of the action. Tell Debi we said Hi! For a short stay, convenience matters, and this location delivers.

Start with the Eiffel Tower by Day and Return at Night

Yes, it is touristy. Yes, everyone goes. Yes, you absolutely should too.

Visit the Eiffel Tower during the day first so you can truly appreciate its scale and the surrounding area. Seeing it in daylight lets you take in the details and enjoy the park atmosphere. Then save your most dramatic photos for nighttime.

For the best evening photo location, head to 126 Rue de l’Université. This is one of those spots people whisper about because the angle is perfection. The tower rises beautifully behind you, making it one of the best romantic photo backdrops in Paris.

Important reality check: Paris streets often include cobblestones, and walking in heels can feel like an Olympic event. Bring your heels with you in a bag and change when you get there. Your ankles will thank you.

Also bring a phone stand or small tripod so you and your spouse can both be in the photo. No need to gamble on strangers with questionable camera skills.

Every hour on the hour after dark, the Eiffel Tower sparkles for five minutes. It is stunning. This area gets crowded for about ten minutes every hour as everyone gathers for the light show, so arrive a little early and claim your spot.

Dinner at Carpe Diem

After your tower adventure, make your way to Carpe Diem for dinner. Paris has no shortage of restaurants, but there is something lovely about ending a sightseeing-heavy day with a cozy dinner and a glass of wine while replaying your best moments.

This is your time to slow down, toast the trip, and pretend moving to Paris permanently is still a realistic option.

The Louvre Needs a Full Day

Do not make the mistake of saying, “We’ll just pop into the Louvre for an hour.”

No, you will not.

The Louvre is enormous, world famous, and deserving of real time. Buy your tickets weeks in advance. This is not optional if you want to avoid disappointment and long waits.

Plan an entire day here. Even then, you will only scratch the surface. Of course you can see the Mona Lisa, but there is so much more. The architecture alone is worth your time, and the collection is overwhelming in the best possible way.

Wear comfortable shoes. This is a museum marathon, not a casual stroll.

Walk Paris Properly from the Louvre to Notre Dame

One of the greatest joys of Paris is walking between landmarks and letting the city reveal itself. From the Louvre area, wander toward the Seine. Walk along the river, admire the bridges, and enjoy the kind of scenery that makes you understand why artists never shut up about Paris.

Cross one of the bridges and add a lock if you are feeling sentimental. It is touristy, yes, but also sweet. Sometimes leaning into romance is the right move.

Continue on to Notre Dame. Even after everything the cathedral has endured, it remains one of the most powerful and beautiful sights in Paris. Standing nearby reminds you how much history lives in this city.

A Stylish Day at Hôtel Drouot and the Covered Passages

If you want to see another side of Paris, take a taxi from the hotel to Hôtel Drouot, the famed auction house. This is where art, antiques, and treasures pass through constantly. Even if you are not bidding on a centuries-old chandelier, it is fascinating to visit.

From there, explore the nearby covered passages. These hidden arcades are one of Paris’s great charms. Filled with small shops, cafés, bookshops, and old-world atmosphere, they feel like stepping into another era.

This is Paris at its most cinematic and elegant.

Finish at Galeries Lafayette

After the passages, continue down to Galeries Lafayette, one of the city’s most iconic department stores. Fashion lovers will be in heaven, but even if shopping is not your main hobby, the building itself is worth seeing.

The grand dome, stylish displays, gourmet food options, and rooftop views make it more than a store. It is part of the Paris experience.

Final Paris Weekend Advice

Pack two shoe options. One for style, one for survival.

Reserve major attractions early.

Build in time for wandering.

Carry a portable charger or two.

Ladies, no bra needed!!

Say yes to dessert, Always!

And most importantly, remember that Paris rewards those who slow down enough to notice it.

A weekend in Paris can feel like a movie if you do it right. Stay central, walk often, eat well, dress smartly, and take the photo when the tower sparkles.
