Interior Design Tips: How to Transform Your Small Space Into Something Amazing

March 20, 2025 Rachel Ferrucci

Small homes can feel cozy, but they can also feel cramped and cluttered. To use each square inch efficiently, one must decorate and organize the space. When this is accomplished, one will discover the perks of living in a small home.

Every item in the space must be carefully considered. An interior design studio may be needed to help the owner find the best layout and prevent a cluttered feel. The following ideas are a good place to start.

Downsize the Dining Room Table

People often choose an oversized dining room table to entertain. When entertaining family and friends, choose a smaller table and find other seating options. A table with a leaf allows for more seats, and the leaf can be removed between parties or events. Another option is to install a dining room table that folds away when not in use.

Multifunctional Furnishings

Small spaces benefit greatly from multifunctional furnishings. Use benches rather than seats in the dining room and benefit from their hidden storage. Ottomans in the living room can hide items, and sofa beds are great for guests. However, many people today opt for Murphy beds and downsize their sofas because they live in small spaces.

Clear Up Floor Space

Use every inch of wall space to keep the floor clean and free of obstructions. Storage should be placed up high in the entryway and other parts of the home. When items are placed higher up, the decor becomes the focus of the space.

Open Glass Shelves

Open glass shelves benefit clean homes. Closed cabinets add visual weight to a small space, while open glass shelves make the room appear more open and lighter.

Kitchen Storage

The kitchen is home to countertop appliances, pots and pans, and other essential tools. Finding storage in the kitchen is essential to keep it organized. Pull-out corner organizers and peg systems are two options to ensure everything can easily be reached when cooking.

Light Colors

Light colors make any space look bigger and brighter. Remember this when painting the walls, purchasing furnishings, and choosing decor. White is one color to consider, but other light shades are options if a person is worried that white will make the space look sterile and unwelcoming,

Simplicity

Know when to stop. Minimalism is key in small spaces. Choose simple pieces rather than oversized ornate ones, and limit the number of items. One option is to rotate items out so they don’t overwhelm the space, but the owner can be surrounded by things they love.

Reflective Materials

Reflective materials are an excellent choice for small spaces. Like mirrors, they make any space look bigger. Reflective surfaces bounce light and give the space an airier feel.

Install a Swing

Imagine having a swing in the home rather than traditional seating. Small homes are ideal for this seating option because the swing doesn’t occupy floor space. It immediately makes any room look bigger.

Use All Surfaces

Use existing surfaces to display personal items. People often place photos on refrigerators but can do the same with other surfaces. Add removable wallpaper to the side of a bookcase or cabinet to add personality to a space.

Any person can transform a small space into something amazing with the help of these interior design tips. Try one today to see how it enhances the space. The improvement will be drastic when each tip is implemented, and the owner will want to move on to the next. It’s that dramatic.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
