7 Fun Ways to Shake Off the Holiday Hangover and Survive the Post-Christmas Blues

December 26, 2024 Rachel Ferrucci

Ah, the post-Christmas blues. That inevitable moment when you realize the tree is shedding more needles than your cat sheds fur, the fridge is stuffed with leftovers you’re already sick of, and your bank account is quietly weeping in the corner. The gifts are unwrapped, the carols have been sung, and now you’re left staring at a tangle of fairy lights that refuse to cooperate. It’s that bittersweet lull between Christmas and New Year’s when the magic fizzles out and reality comes knocking. But don’t worry—there’s a fun way to bounce back and reclaim your festive spirit!

Here are five things you can do to banish the blues and start the post-holiday season with a bang, or at least have a well-deserved laugh.

1. Host a “Re-Gift Extravaganza”

Let’s face it there’s always that gift. The one that makes you think, “What am I going to do with this?” Instead of letting it collect dust, why not turn it into the star of its own party? Invite your friends over for a re-gifting bash where everyone brings their most head-scratching present. Set up a fun swap or turn it into a White Elephant-style game. You’ll end up with something new or at least new to you, lots of laughs, and the satisfaction of knowing that your third pair of novelty socks has found a loving new home.

2. Dive Into “Holiday Cleanup Olympics”

Cleaning up after Christmas doesn’t have to feel like a chore, it can be a competition! Challenge your family to see who can take down the tree the fastest or untangle a string of lights in record time. Bonus points for anyone who actually fits the decorations back into the original packaging, or who wraps the most ornaments in the pile of tissue paper in the corner from the unwrapping craziness. The winner gets the last slice of pie, a “Holiday Hero” title, or just the joy of watching everyone else struggle. Turning cleanup into a game is a surefire way to make it feel less like a post Christmas buzzkill.

3. Plan a Ridiculously Over-the-Top New Year’s Resolution

Nothing cures post Christmas blues like planning for the future, especially if it involves something hilariously unrealistic. Why settle for Drink More Water or Exercise Regularly when you can aim for something like Learn To Juggle Flaming Torches or Train To Be The Next Ninja Warrior? The key is to brainstorm the wildest resolutions imaginable and have fun with it. Will you actually do it? Probably not. But coming up with the ideas will have you giggling, and who knows? You might actually end up doing something amazing.

4. Declare a “Leftovers Potluck Challenge”

If you’re drowning in roast, potatoes, and fish, it’s time to get creative. Invite friends over and challenge everyone to whip up a dish using only their holiday leftovers. Think fish tacos, shredded roast over potatoes with gravy, or mashed potato waffles. The more outlandish the dish, the better. It’s a fun way to clear out the fridge, try new flavors, and avoid eating the same plate of reheated food for the fifth day in a row. Plus, you get to share laughs and recipes with your favorite people.

5. Treat Yourself to “Guilt-Free Hibernation”

Christmas is exhausting. Between the gift shopping, endless cooking, cleaning, and family, you’ve earned a break. So, declare an official post-holiday hibernation day. Stay in your pajamas, binge-watch your favorite guilty pleasure shows, and eat cookies for breakfast without a shred of remorse. You’ve spent weeks spreading joy, now it’s time to focus on yourself. Think of it as a reset button before diving into the new year. If anyone questions your decision, just remind them you’re “recovering from spreading cheer.”

6. Go on a “Holiday Clearance Treasure Hunt”

Post-Christmas shopping isn’t just for returning that sweater in the wrong size, it’s a chance to score some amazing deals! Hit up the stores, or your favorite online shops for clearance treasures like discounted holiday decor, cozy winter accessories, and even gifts for next year. Turn it into a challenge with friends to see who can find the weirdest, most random clearance item. Whether you come back with a half-price wreath or an inflatable Santa for your yard, the thrill of the hunt will lift your spirits and leave you feeling like a bargain-hunting champion.

7. Organize a “Holiday Movie Marathon (With a Twist)”

Sure, you’ve watched all the classic Christmas movies, but now it’s time to mix things up. Pick a theme, like the cheesiest holiday rom-coms, animated favorites, or even “holiday movies that don’t feel like holiday movies” (This is perfect timing to throw in Die Hard). Invite your friends or family to join in, bring some leftover cookies and hot cocoa, and settle in for a cozy binge session. Bonus points if you create a drinking game or bingo card to go along with the movies for extra laughs!

The post Christmas blues are real, but they don’t have to get the better of you. They’re just your brain’s way of transitioning from the whirlwind of the holidays to the fresh start of a new year. The key is to inject a little fun, a dash of creativity, and a sprinkle of silliness into your days.

So, instead of sulking over the deflated decorations and fading twinkle lights, embrace the post holiday chaos. Swap the blues for laughs, the leftovers for something exciting, and the cleanup for a game. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to take on the new year armed with leftover mashed potato recipes, a new ninja warrior resolution, and a string of untangled lights to boot. Cheers to making the most of the holiday aftermath!

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
