When we were planning our Outer Banks trip with friends, we knew we had to add something adventurous to the itinerary—and the Wild Horse Adventure Tour was the perfect pick! We signed up for the tour thinking we’d see a few horses on the beach, but it turned out to be so much more than that. Not only did we get up close with the legendary wild horses of Corolla, but we also discovered a hidden gem—an entire town tucked away on the north beach that you can only access with a 4-wheel drive!
To start off, we quickly learned that you can’t just drive out to this beach unless you’re properly prepared. You need a 4WD vehicle (and trust me, you’ll need it!) and a permit to access the area, so be sure to do your homework before heading out. Lucky for us, Wild Horse Adventure Tours had it all covered with their open-air Hummers. Once we got going, we were bouncing along the sandy roads and dodging dunes, totally amazed at how remote the area felt—almost like we’d been transported to another world.
The horses….WOW! We were absolutely blown away by how many wild horses we saw, and these majestic beauties were everywhere, just hanging out in people’s front yards and strolling around like they owned the place. They basically do own the place because they are protected in every sense of the word. Our guide was fantastic and gave us the backstory on the horses, explaining how these Spanish mustangs have been roaming the shores for centuries. It wasn’t just a sightseeing tour; we got a mini history lesson too, learning all about how the horses were brought over during the Spanish colonial period and how they’ve become a cherished part of the Outer Banks heritage.
One thing we learned the hard way is that while they do tell you it’s fine to bring drinks and snacks, you won’t want to attempt eating or drinking during the ride. It’s bumpy and windy! Our Hummer was bouncing around like crazy (which added to the fun), so we left our snacks in the cooler and kept our eyes peeled for the horses instead. Best tip is to not bring them.
All in all, it was an experience I would 100% do again. There’s just something magical about seeing these wild horses up close, with the wind whipping through your hair and the sound of the ocean in the background.
