Mommy Wine Culture and Mental Health

November 7, 2022 Rachel Ferrucci

The phrase “mommy wine culture” has become all too familiar these days. It refers to women who use alcohol as a coping mechanism for stress and anxiety, usually because they have children to care for and other responsibilities that demand their time and attention. While the term is often used in jest and played up by memes on social media, it actually represents a serious issue that affects many mothers. Moms may be experiencing a mental health crisis, but instead of getting the help they need, they turn to alcohol instead. Let’s talk about how using wine or other substances can negatively impact your mental health and what you can do about it.

Wine as a Coping Mechanism

The truth is that anyone who is using alcohol to cope with life has a problem. Many people don’t see themselves as having an addiction because they don’t stumble around drunk. Mommy wine culture is a lighthearted term given to mothers who use wine as a coping mechanism.

While having a glass of wine a couple of times a week is no big deal, people who drink wine daily or nightly to cope with the normal pressures of parenting, working, and daily living should seek out help. The good news is that there are outpatient treatment programs through places like New Day Recovery Services so that moms can learn better coping mechanisms to help them manage their stress. While online posts and memes poke fun at mommy wine culture, the problem is real.

Mommy Wine Culture Minimizes Mental Health Issues

Many mothers have underlying mental health issues. Whether they are experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety, or they have trauma they are coping with, mommy wine culture makes it more difficult for these women to seek out help. It normalizes having wine daily and using it to handle all the pressures of being a mom.

Women are often devoted to caring for their children but fail to care for themselves in the process. Many women with mental health problems go uncared for because they are so focused on their kids’ needs that they don’t realize how much help they need themselves. They think they can solve their stress and anxiety with a glass of wine and before long they become dependent on it.

There is a stigma for moms, especially after their baby is born that makes it challenging for moms to get the help they need. If their mental health needs go unmet for too long, eventually many moms will start to self-medicate. It’s important to talk with your doctor if you are experiencing anxiety that makes it difficult to function or sudden sadness that makes it hard to focus or get out of bed.

The Harm of Mommy Wine Culture Memes

Social media and Google are filled with memes for mommy wine culture. These posts can glorify hard-partying mothers who choose to drink for every occasion, from watching their children complete school projects to helping them study for a test. While drinking a couple of glasses of wine on occasion is no big deal, it becomes a big deal when every day and every task is an occasion that requires alcohol. This kind of behavior isn’t healthy or appropriate for any parent.

Continuing to poke fun at it takes away from the reality that this is an issue that should be dealt with. It’s just as important for them to get help as it is for a man who comes home nightly to drink just to cope with his stressors as well. While moderation is key, drinking heavily each day can cause serious problems for moms and kids.

Your Children Notice

Whether you realize it or not, when you’re drinking you act differently than when you are sober. You might start getting sick more often, which means less time for yourself and your family. Your relationships may suffer as you focus on drinking instead of spending time with loved ones. You may find yourself in a cycle of anger and guilt. And kids are intuitive and see these things clearly. Shame and embarrassment can also make it more difficult to seek out help.

Conclusion

Mommy wine culture is a symptom of a bigger problem. The underlying issue is often rooted in the unmet mental health needs of moms. Many moms carry a huge burden for working, caring for children, the household, and more. This can lead to OCD, anxiety, depression, and more. Getting appropriate treatment and rehab for moms who drink too much wine can help them learn to cope in healthier ways and be more present in their parenting and life.

You’ll find a replica David in the square but going to Accademia Gallery in Florence and seeing this breathtaking statue by Michelangelo is 100% worth it, whether you like art or not. His right leg has a tree stump which balances the entire statue.
